‘Peace Corps’ Named Trotter of the Year

Peace Corps, a 3-year-old filly who counted the World Trotting Derby and the Kentucky Futurity among her 16 victories last year, was named Trotter of the Year in voting by members of the United States Harness Writers Assn.

Matt’s Scooter, who won more than $1.1 million in 30 starts in 1989, has been named Pacer of the Year in voting conducted by the United States Trotting Assn.

Peace Corps, owned by Bjorn Pettersson and trained by Tom Haughton, won $1,002,701 in 19 starts last year. The filly compiled 239 votes in balloting by members of the Harness Writers Assn., easily beating Park Avenue Joe, Scenic Regal, Napoletano and Mack Lobell.

In other trotting categories, Royal Troubadour was named top 2-year-old colt; Cayster, selected best 3-year-old filly; Esquire Spur, top 3-year-old colt; Scenic Regal, top older mare, and Napoletano, best older male.

Matt’s Scooter, a 4-year-old son of Direct Scooter, won 23 races last year and pushed his career earnings to $2,944,591, second among North American-based trotters to Nihilator, who has won $3.2 million.

Matt’s Scooter was voted the honor 262-4 over Jaguar Spur.

Matt’s Scooter is owned by Gordon and Illa Rumpel of Calgary, Canada, and Charles Juravinski, of Dundas, Canada. He is trained by Harry Poulton.

Winners in other pacing categories included Till We Meet Again, top 2-year-old colt; Town Pro, top 2-year-old filly; Goalie Jeff, best 3-year-old colt; Cheery Hello, best 3-year-old filly, and Armbro Feather, top older mare.
