THE SIDELINES : Stallings Seen as Alabama Coach
Gene Stallings, a Bear Bryant protege who coached at Texas A&M; and in the NFL before being fired by the Phoenix Cardinals, is expected to be named head coach of the Crimson Tide, according to published reports today.
The Birmingham News and the Tuscaloosa News reported that Stallings, 54, is expected to succeed Bill Curry, who quit to take the Kentucky job.
Stallings was interviewed Tuesday in Dallas by University of Alabama President Roger Sayers, Athletic Director Hootie Ingram and Dr. Tom Jones, the school’s faculty chairman for athletics and a member of the four-man search committee, the Birmingham News said, quoting unnamed sources.
The newspaper said Alabama officials are expected to call a press conference as early as Thursday to introduce Stallings and at least two members of his coaching staff.
Stallings, contacted Tuesday night at his home in Paris, Texas, told the newspapers he would have no comment.
