TONIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTS

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

SAN DIEGO STATE (9-6, 1-1) at WYOMING (8-5, 1-1), 6:30 p.m. PST

TV--None. Radio--KFMB (760).

The road has not been good to the Aztecs, who have lost 42 of 46 there over the past five seasons, including 15 in a row and four in a row in Laramie. SDSU is in an eight-way tie for first at 1-1 as WAC teams in action last weekend split their series. Poor shooting remains a problem for the Aztecs, who are making 44.6% of their shots. Senior guard Michael Best, the team’s expected outside threat, is shooting 38.1%. Wyoming split its trip last week, winning at New Mexico in overtime (89-87) and losing at Texas El Paso (72-62). The Cowboys are the conference’s youngest team, starting a senior, three sophomores and a freshman. Sophomore forward Reggie Slater leads in scoring (16.2 points per game) and rebounding (11.5 per game).

WEST COAST CONFERENCE

PEPPERDINE (6-7, O-O) at UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO (6-7, 1-0), 7:30 p.m.

TV--None. Radio--KWNK (670).

The teams meet for the fourth time in less than a year in the USD Sports Center. Pepperdine defeated USD three times last season, twice by just three points, including the opening round of the West Coast Conference tournament in San Francisco. The Waves have taken five of the past six. Ten of the past 14 games have been decided by five or fewer points. Pepperdine, which has lost four of its past six, has five players in double-figure scoring, led by sixth man Dexter Howard (14.8). The Waves are 6-1 in games they have scored 80 or more points, 0-6 when scoring 79 or fewer. USD, which has won three in a row and four of six on this home stand, has just two players scoring in double figures--John Jerome (19.3) and Gylan Dottin (10.2). Last year, the WCC had back-to-back Friday-Saturday games. This year, USD plays on consecutive days only twice. For the most part, conference games are on Thursday and Saturday. This game was incorrectly reported as being a Wednesday night game in Wednesday’s edition.

NONCONFERENCE

POINT LOMA NAZARENE (5-9) at U.S. INTERNATIONAL (7-10), 7:30

Radio--KVSD (1000)

The Gulls will be going for their fourth consecutive victory, something they haven’t done since 1985-1986, when they won five in a row. The game concludes a nine-game home stand. USIU will play six of its next seven on the road. Guard Steve Smith, who played at Serra High School, had 10 assists in USIU’s 117-98 victory over Sacramento State Tuesday and needs three more to tie the school’s single-season record he set last year. PLNC will probably rely on 6-10 center Mike Flores, who scored 22 in the Crusaders’ 91-79 loss to Southern California College Tuesday. USIU defeated PLNC, 127-114, last year and leads the series, 3-2.
