Rob Westervelt of Hart High, who passed for 2,064 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, has committed to attend Weber State in Ogden, Utah, in the fall.

In addition, Newbury Park lineman Joe Smigiel (6-5, 255 pounds) has signed with Cal State Long Beach, and two defensive backs from Thousand Oaks announced commitments Monday.

Jim Magallanes (6-1, 185), a Times All-Ventura County player who had three interceptions for the Lancers last season, has accepted a grant-in-aid to play football at Pennsylvania of the Ivy League. Lance Alverson (5-10, 175), a Thousand Oaks defensive back in 1987 who sat out last season at Moorpark College because of an injured knee, has accepted a scholarship from Fort Lewis College, a Division II school in Durango, Colo.

Westervelt is expected to sign a letter of intent Wednesday at Hart, according to Mike Herrington, the school’s football coach.

Westervelt (6-3, 210), a two-time All-Southern Section selection, made recruiting visits to San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton but remained unsigned after high school seniors were eligible to sign national letters of intent on Feb. 14.

Smigiel, an All-Ventura County selection who played on the offensive and defensive line at Newbury Park, probably will concentrate on offense for Long Beach Coach George Allen. Smigiel canceled a trip to New Mexico after signing with the 49ers on Sunday.
