JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Bakersfield Too Much for Valley

Share

It took Bakersfield College only 15 minutes to show visiting Valley why it’s the top-ranked team in the nation. Bakersfield scored 28 first-quarter points Saturday night on its way to a 45-14 Western State Conference victory at Memorial Stadium before 9,356 fans.

Valley was impressive on one drive, however, moving 98 yards in 11 plays for a second-quarter touchdown that left the Monarchs trailing, 28-7, at the intermission. Valley (2-4, 2-2 in WSC play) almost scored again late in the second quarter, but time expired.

Bakersfield running back Nathan Dupree fumbled on the Renegade 48 with 48 seconds left in the second quarter and Valley’s Louis Melancon recovered. Valley quarterback Trendell Williams tried to hit receiver Marcus Bridges at the goal line, but the ball fell incomplete as time ran out.

Bakersfield (6-0, 5-0) scored on four consecutive possessions in the first quarter. Three of the touchdowns came on plays of 53 yards or longer.

The Renegades did just enough in the third quarter to put the game out of reach, scoring 10 points to open a 38-7 lead. Bakersfield added a touchdown in the fourth quarter after Valley scored.
