Cardenas Wins Award in Soccer at Northridge

Junior forward Gus Cardenas has been named the most valuable player of the Cal State Northridge men’s soccer team.

The most valuable offensive player was Bobby Reyes, a junior forward, and the most valuable defensive player was Matt Ziegler, a freshman wingback. Junior defender Ed Burns was selected most inspirational and junior midfielder John Alevras won the coach’s award.

Northridge finished 9-7-3.

Billy Kranz, a sophomore forward from Moorpark College, was named the Western State Conference most valuable player in soccer.

Moorpark’s Shaun Christensen, a freshman midfielder; Richie Rungaitis, a sophomore defender; and Robert Harris, a freshman forward, also were named to the first team. Other selections included: Eugene Saldana and Efrain Montes of Glendale, Joseph Sewell of Oxnard and Ian Grooms of Mission.

Kranz and Rungaitis also were named to the All-Southern California team.

The Hart High boys’ cross-country team jumped from ninth to third in The Harrier magazine’s final national rankings by virtue of the Indians’ 58-113 victory over Madera in the state Division I championships last month.

Madera, a Central Section team that was ranked third nationally and first in California before the state meet, dropped to seventh.

After its second-place finish in the state Division II final, the Camarillo boys’ team, unranked in the previous poll, moved to 20th on the national list.

The Agoura girls’ team maintained its No. 2 ranking after winning the state Division I championship. The Chargers remained behind Mountain View High of Orem, Utah.

Glendale College, which defeated host Citrus, 23-16, in the Southern California Bowl on Saturday, is the 13th-ranked team in the J. C. Grid-Wire’s final national poll.

The Vaqueros (9-2), the Western State Conference Northern Division champions, were five places ahead of division runner-up Moorpark (9-2).

Joe Beauvais of Moorpark and Jeff Barrett of Santa Monica have been honored as J. C. Grid-Wire scholar-athlete All-Americans.

Beauvais, an offensive lineman, has a 3.62 grade-point average and is majoring in business administration. Barrett, a former Burroughs High quarterback, has a 3.1 GPA.

Valley running back Cliff Robinson, Glendale linebacker Dean Colvin and Ventura linebacker Peter Thow were honorable-mention scholar-athlete All-Americans.

Freddie Bradley of Moorpark, Bobby Webster of Glendale, John Johnson of Antelope Valley and Tim Albrent of Ventura are among the national leaders in their respective categories based on J. C. Athletic Bureau statistics.

Bradley, who set or tied several national career rushing records this season, led the nation in scoring with 180 points this season (18.0-points-a-game average) and was second in rushing with 1,946 yards (194.6 average).

Webster, who scored 132 points, ranked sixth in scoring average (13.2) and was 12th in rushing average (136.0).

Johnson, a cornerback, had eight interceptions, which placed him in a tie for third. Albrent was tied for eighth in punting average at 41.6 yards a kick.

An all-comers track and field meet will be held at Cal State Northridge on Saturday, starting with the men’s hammer throw at 11 a.m.

The first running event will be the women’s 800 meters at 12:45 p.m.

Jason Stelle of Agoura High signed a letter of intent to attend USC in the fall. Stelle won the Southern Section 2-A Division title in the 100-yard backstroke last season.
