It seemed fitting that Brian Vasey’s game-winning home run for host Simi Valley High in the seventh inning Friday sent a lady scrambling for cover and nearly hit an ambulance parked behind the field.

His two-run blast off Tony Siegel capped a day in which the Pulmonary Pioneers left the crowd gasping on several occasions. And twice the Pioneers scrambled themselves, from deficits of four and three runs, before finally handing Thousand Oaks a 12-10 loss in a Marmonte League game.

“I think it’s going to be one of those years where things fall into place for us,” said Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers, whose team improved to 15-2 and 6-0 in league play. “I believe that good things happen to good people, and these kids are good people.”

Leading the way is Vasey (6-0), who also came on in relief in the seventh inning and struck out Jeff Naster, Thousand Oaks’ No. 4 hitter, with the go-ahead run at third base. Last season, Vasey served up a game-winning home run in the bottom of the seventh at Thousand Oaks.

“I didn’t think about what happened last year until I rounded the base, and it hit me,” said Vasey, who trotted with his arms in the air and was mobbed by his teammates as he touched home plate.

Thousand Oaks catcher Brian Sturges, who had hit a two-run homer in the first, stood near home plate well after his teammates had cleared the field. He held his mask in his right hand and stared at the mob as if he’d seen a ghost.

“Unbelievable,” Sturges said. “Our center fielder just kept going back and going back and I thought, ‘This can’t be happening.’ ”

It did, and capped a horrendous day for the Lancers, who entered the game on a nine-game winning streak. Thousand Oaks (11-5, 4-2) committed nine errors, including five during a sixth inning in which Simi Valley scored four runs and overcame a 9-6 deficit.

“It was an embarrassing day for us,” Thousand Oaks Coach Jim Hansen said.

Simi Valley committed just one error and, offensively, kept the ball in play by striking out just four times in 38 at-bats. Vasey, who limited Channel Islands to three hits in a complete-game victory Wednesday, was two for five with three runs batted in.

Ryan Kritscher and Jason Goldstein each had three hits for Thousand Oaks, which finished with 14. Bryan Corey, Cory Bowen, and Sturges each had two hits.
