Marty Spaulding, former offensive and defensive line coach at El Toro, is slowly adjusting to life at Laguna Hills.
Spaulding, one of four finalists for the head coaching position at El Toro this year, moved to Laguna Hills High this fall. He teaches science, coaches the linemen and is an academic adviser to athletes.
“There sure are some fine, respectable kids in this school,” Spaulding said. “That’s the good news.”
The bad news?
“Well . . . the football team,” he said.
Spaulding doesn’t mean any disrespect, it’s just that Laguna Hills doesn’t exactly measure up to El Toro in football tradition. But with the arrival of head Coach Steve Bresnahan three years ago, the Hawks have greatly improved--they are currently 2-1--and now Spaulding hopes to start churning out top Division I linemen prospects for which he was famous at El Toro.
