Dominguez Hills Women Travel to San Bernardino

After winning its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opener against highly regarded Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday in Pomona, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team travels to Cal State San Bernardino for a match at 11 a.m. Saturday.

It will be the first conference game ever for San Bernardino, which is competing in the NCAA Division II for the first time after playing as a Division III independent the past three seasons. The Coyotes are 6-2-1.

San Bernardino has two of the leading scorers in the conference in sophomore forwards Merinda Tenace and Jackie Powers. Tenace, whose father Gene was a baseball player for the Oakland A’s and is currently a coach with the Toronto Blue Jays, has seven goals and one assist for 15 points. Powers has four goals and five assists for 13 points.

Dominguez Hills, which is ranked No. 5 in Division II with a 7-1-1 record, has been led by forward Amy Rubin. The junior leads the conference in scoring with 22 points.

She scored both of the Toros’ goals in the 2-0 victory over 13th-ranked Pomona. The Toros have also been led by Rubin’s twin sister, Anna, who has 10 points, and freshman forward Staci Blough, who has eight points.

Toro sophomore goalkeeper Briana O’Dowd has five shutouts and an 0.54 goals-against average.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will meet Portland in a West Coast Conference match at 7 tonight at Gersten Pavilion.

Portland is 10-6 overall and 2-0 in WCC play.

Loyola (9-7 overall, 1-1 in league play) has been led by junior outside hitter Joli Eberhart, who has 238 kills and ranks among national leaders in digs with 257. Freshman setter Robin Ortgiesen, a former Mira Costa High standout, leads the conference in assists with 12.1.

After tonight’s match, the Lions begin a four-match road trip starting Thursday at St. Mary’s.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team opened CCAA play with a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday.

On Saturday, the Toros will travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a match at 1 p.m.

The Coyotes moved into the NCAA Division II rankings this week at No. 16 and defeated 15th-ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 4-0, on Tuesday in their conference opener.

The Coyotes, whose only loss was in overtime to Division I San Diego State, have been led by sophomore forward Rolando Uribe, who has 15 points. Junior forward Fernando Martinez has 11 points.

Dominguez Hills has been led by junior forward Gerardo Yepez, who ranks among CCAA leaders with 14 points. Another standout has been freshman defender Keith Martin with six points.

The Loyola Marymount men’s soccer team will try to snap a five-game losing streak when it plays host to Southern California College in a nonconference match at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Lions (2-7-1 overall, 0-3 in WCC play) were defeated by the University of San Francisco, 7-0, on Tuesday.

Loyola has been led by senior forward Rob Faison and junior midfielder Jeff Van Gastel with five points each.
