Komara, Angeles Lead Aztec Women to Soccer Victory

Two former area high school standouts contributed to San Diego State’s 3-1 women’s soccer victory in a nonconference game against Cal Lutheran Tuesday.

Cal Lutheran (10-3) led at the half before Kim Komara, a Bonita Vista graduate, scored unassisted at 63:50. Joy Angeles, out of Mira Mesa High, added the second goal for the Aztecs (7-5-1) at 84:30. Reese Cicchinelli completed the scoring at 86:10.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Division III St. Mary’s of Minnesota, 3-1, in a nonconference men’s soccer game at PLNC (2-10).

The Crusaders had a shutout until St. Mary’s (4-7) scored at 85:00. For PLNC, Dave Beck scored off the assist by Robert Romero at 9:30. Noel Pekell had an unassisted second-half goal at 12:00, then he fed J. Doehring for the final goal at 80:00.

MEN’ TENNIS

Fredrik Axsater of University of San Diego advanced to today’s continuing qualifying rounds of the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Championships, by winning his opening two rounds at Austin, Tex. Axsater defeated Texas’ Kirk Haygarth, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 before making short work of TCU’s Mark Tjia 6-2, 6-4, in the second round. He will play Vlad Krystic of Tyler (Tex.) Community College today.

USD’s Kevin Bradley wasn’t as lucky and was eliminated in his second match of the day by Doug Brown of Texas A&M;, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Bradley won his opener against Ryan Clark of Illinois, 7-5, 6-4.

USD’s Jose Luis Noriega has already qualified for the main draw, which begins Thursday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene rallied from a 10-3 deficit in the fifth game to take a 9-15, 15-5, 15-11, 11-15, 15-13 victory over Biola in a NAIA District 3 game at PLNC (11-11, 5-6).

The Crusaders were led by Robin Rabello’s 37 kills and Debbie Simpson’s 20. Biola, one of the District 3’s top teams, dropped to 11-3, 10-2.
