As far as Chaminade High quarterback Travis Hall is concerned, there are several reasons for his team’s success. But none is more important than the fact that Hall is still in one piece.

Hall has been sacked only once as Chaminade (5-0) has rebounded from a dismal 1-8-1 season. The lone sack came last week against St. Paul on a play in which Hall said he was forced from the pocket and rolled right into a defensive player.

“The offensive line is so fired up to protect me, it’s incredible,” Hall said.

The line is getting the job done through technique and heart, not sheer size. Hall (6-foot-2 1/2, 205 pounds), in fact, is heavier than all but two of his linemen: Matt Klawitter (5-11, 215) and Jason Adal (6-1, 250).

Foot speed helps. Hall has rushed for 122 yards. He also has passed for 603 yards and three touchdowns.

Offense: San Fernando running back LaKarlos Townsend has emerged as the big-play back of the area. In his past two games, he has scored eight touchdowns; not coincidentally, the Tigers have hammered El Camino Real and Taft by the combined score of 82-0. Townsend has rushed for 532 yards in four games for the Tigers (5-0) and trails the area’s leading City Section rusher, Elijah Raphael of Kennedy, by 89 yards. But Townsend, who has scored 13 touchdowns, has carried the ball 44 fewer times than Raphael and is averaging 9.2 yards in 57 carries. . . .

San Fernando has outscored its five opponents, 185-32, the largest positive point differential among area schools with the exception of Highland (218-39), a first-year team that plays a free-lance schedule. . . .

Oxnard’s Dan Duchai has scored points in every way possible except via a safety. He has four touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions. Additionally, he has kicked eight extra points and two field goals.

Passing: Birmingham quarterback Vince Lampkin has the best pass-completion percentage (64.9) among the area’s City Section players. He has completed 24 of 37 for 325 yards for three touchdowns. Since the fourth game of last season, Birmingham has gone 11-1 when Lampkin starts. . . .

Six of the region’s top seven passing leaders are from Ventura County. Following Hart’s Ryan Connors, who has 1,460 yards, are: Keith Smith of Newbury Park (1,263), Eric Bennett of Simi Valley (1,087), Larry Bumpus of Oxnard (988), Ryan Fien of Royal (798), Ryan Huisenga of Moorpark (745) and David Andrade of Hueneme (744). . . .

Fien has thrown only one interception in 95 passes.

Defense: Harvard-Westlake’s Justin Ehrlich makes touchdowns the hard way. On Friday, Ehrlich scooped up the ball after a blocked punt against Oak Park and rambled 32 yards. The week before the junior defensive back returned an interception 102 yards. . . .

Alemany has recorded three shutouts in four games, blanking St. Monica, Hoover and Notre Dame by the combined score of 120-0.

Records: Van Nuys (1-3) has won just one game and the combined record of the three teams that have beaten the Wolves--Birmingham (4-0), Sylmar (3-1) and Marshall (4-0-1)--is 11-1-1. . . . Verdugo Hills’ 0-5 start mirrors that of last season. But the Dons are much improved. Last year, the Dons were shut out three times and scored only 19 points in the first five games. This year, Verdugo Hills has not been shut out and has scored 55 points. Perhaps the improvement has to do with Donald Coulter, the Dons’ capable running back who has carried 52 times for 415 yards and scored three touchdowns. . . .

Buena running back George Keiaho has scored 90 points and needs just 10 more to break the school single-season record. . . .

The last time Simi Valley (4-1) had as many as four wins in a season was in 1987 when the Pioneers were 4-5-1.

Miscellaneous: Littlerock (4-1) has outscored opponents, 82-61, but that disparity is not reflected in yardage gained versus yardage allowed. The Lobos have gained 1,260 yards (796 rushing, 464 passing) and have given up the same total (832 rushing, 428 passing). . . .

For the first time since 1985, Hart enters Foothill League play with a losing record. The Indians, 2-3 after Friday’s 21-20 loss to Quartz Hill, had a 1-3-1 nonleague record in 1985. That year, Hart reached the Southern Section semifinals. . . .

Simi Valley has allowed more yards (1,634) than it has gained (1,485) but has won four of its five games. . . .

The top three offensive teams in the region are Channel League members: Ventura averages 404 yards a game, followed by Oxnard (387) and Buena (381).
