PREP ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills’ Water Polo Streak Ends at 120

The Buena Park water polo team ended Sunny Hills’ 120-game Freeway League winning streak that spanned 22 seasons by defeating the Lancers, 7-6, Thursday at Independence Park in Fullerton.

Sunny Hills hadn’t lost a Freeway League game since 1969, compiling the longest league winning streak in Southern Section water polo history.

Buena Park (8-9, 2-0 in league) rallied from a 5-3 fourth-quarter deficit, tying the score on goals by Matt Gillen and Brian Lawson. Gillen scored again with 2 minutes 29 second remaining, and less than a minute later, Chuck Laws scored to give the Coyotes a 7-5 lead.

Sunny Hills’ Omar Amr scored with 49 seconds left to bring the Lancers (8-5, 1-1) within one goal and the Lancers had a chance to tie the score at the buzzer, but the officials ruled that Amr’s shot was too late.

In Angelus League girls’ volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Santa Margarita 0--Mater Dei, the No. 2-ranked girls’ volleyball team in the county, overcame a sluggish start to win, 15-8, 15-4, 15-11.

The victory put the Monarchs (11-3, 2-1) in a second-place tie with Santa Margarita (5-5, 2-1) behind Lakewood St. Joseph, the No. 1-ranked team in Division 5-A.

Ellie Alalin led Mater Dei with nine kills and Maya Leedom had nine for Santa Margarita. Patti Boland had 26 assists for the Monarchs.
