Brethren Christian 35, Ontario Christian 7--Brethren Christian (5-1, 1-0) scored 27 second-half points against visiting Ontario Christian (0-6, 0-1) at Artesia High.

Matt Marksbury increased the Warriors’ 8-0 halftime lead with an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown with four minutes left in the third quarter. Brethren Christian guard John Deweese later scored on a trick play, taking a pitch from quarterback Dan Cerio and going 10 yards for the touchdown to make it 21-0.

Ayala 17, Orange Lutheran 14--The Lancers’ second-half comeback fell just short at Chino High.

Trailing, 17-0, at halftime, Orange Lutheran (2-4, 1-0) scored on Dale Huff’s 10-yard third quarter run, four plays after J.P. Presley recovered a fumble on the Ayala 35.

Quarterback Lenny Gavin capped a 79-yard drive, aided by three Ayala penalties, with a one-yard run with 7:38 to play.

Orange Lutheran apparently had Ayala stopped on the ensuing possession, forcing Ayala to punt from its own 42, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave the Bulldogs a first down. Ayala (3-3, 1-0) then kept the ball for the rest of the game.

Ayala’s Mike Payne ran for a game-high 89 yards on nine carries, including a 48-yard second quarter touchdown.
