HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Big Plays Carry El Camino; LJCD’s Abrams, Salaam Make Record Books

Second-ranked El Camino gave up as many points by halftime--14--as it had all season, but the Wildcats relied on big plays and defense to pull away with 21 unanswered points in the second half in a 28-14 Avocado League victory at Oceanside.

Oceanside (3-3, 1-2), running well on its opening drive, took a 7-0 lead on John Portugal’s one-yard plunge. El Camino (5-1, 3-0) tied the game on Mike Gee’s two-yard run, but the Pirates took the halftime lead on a short run by Marcus Andrews.

A different El Camino team came out for the second half, tying the game on the first drive as a good kickoff return and a 34-yard run by Gee set up a 14-yard scoring play from Noel Prefontaine to Bryant Westbrook to tie the game at 14-all.

El Camino held Oceanside on three downs on the next drive, and on the fist play after the punt Westbrook broke a 47-yard scoring run to give the Wildcats the lead.

Oceanside didn’t come close to scoring in the half, and El Camino added another scoring drive capped by Gee’s four-yard run for the final margin.

Gee gained 165 yards on two carries as El Camino rushed for 246 yards. Westbrook made the most of his three carries, gaining 90 yards.

El Camino, which has outscored opponents, 165-28, held the Pirates to 90 rushing yards and Portugal, one of the county’s passing leaders, to five completions for 62 yards.

Other Avocado games:

Escondido 10, Carlsbad 8--Lance Lawton led the way for Escondido (3-3, 2-1), gaining 165 yards on 29 carries. Chris Ellis scored Escondido’s only touchdown on a four-yard run.Quarterback Brian Byrne completed 15 of 22 passes for 166 yards. Escondido’s Junior Cienega came through with two sacks and six tackles, two unassisted. Brian Everest had three unassisted and seven unassisted. Carlsbad fell to 2-4, 0-3.

San Marcos 35, Ramona 14--Quarterback Chaise Bivin had 155 yards total offense, 67 rushing and 88 passing, to lead ninth-ranked San Marcos (5-1, 3-0). Bivin completed five of 11 with one interception and one touchdown. He also ran for two scores. Fullback Mark Frazier had 124 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, but had two touchdowns called back. Ramona’s Michael Davis ran for two touchdowns, including a 67-yarder. Ramona fell to 0-6, 0-2.

Eight-man League

La Jolla Country Day 73, Francis Parker 23--Eric Abrams kicked eight extra points and now has a total of 152, eclipsing the San Diego Section record of 147. Abrams needs 22 more to break the National Federation record.

Abrams had teammate Rashaan Salaam to thank for most of his opportunities. Salaam ran 15 times for a career-high 413 yards and seven touchdowns.

Salaam’s total, which eclipsed his previous high of 371 in 1989, was second highest in section history. Erich Fredburg of Julian rushed for 455 yards in 1989.

Francis Parker quarterback Scott Schneider was 16 of 32 for 276 yards and three touchdowns.

City Central League

San Diego 14, Hoover 0--The Cavers (5-0-1, 1-0) recorded their fourth shutout of the season as Alonso Borquez finished with 12 unassisted tackles and one sack, and Marlin McWilson had seven unassisted tackles. Defensive end Brian Broxson intercepted a pass just before halftime after Hoover had moved past the 50-yard line for the only time in the game. St. Augustine fell to 1-5, 0-1.

Crawford 6, Madison 0--Robbie Carter scored on his only run from scrimmage, a 23-yard jaunt, as teammate Altie Parker handled most of the running game, gaining 101 yards on 17 rushes. Crawford’s Mike Bell had four catches for 55 yards. Crawford (1-4-1, 1-0) was playing on campus for the first time in school history. Madison fell to 0-6, 0-1.

City Eastern League

Point Loma 17, Mira Mesa 7--The third-ranked Pointers (5-1, 1-0), sparked by their staunch defense and a second-quarter fumble recovery for a touchdown, held Chad Davis to 45 passing yards and the Marauders (4-2, 0-1) to 48 total yards. Point Loma broke a scoreless tie when Pico Gonzalez recovered a fumble and ran it in from seven yards for the only score of the first half. The lead was stretched to 15-0 on Alex Gresham’s 44-yard run in the third quarter. Gresham and Rantie Harper each rushed for 100 yards. Mira Mesa’s only touchdown, in the fourth quarter, came on a blocked punt.

Morse 48, Serra 14--Gary Taylor rushed 24 times for 278 yards and three touchdowns. Teammate Conan Smith also ran for three touchdowns. Morse had 355 yards on the ground, compared to Serra’s 169. No. 7 Morse, after dropping two in a row, improved to 4-2, 1-0. Serra lost its third in a row and fell to 3-3, 0-1.

City Harbor League

Clairemont 34, Marian 6--Torin Childress rushed 16 times for 128 and two touchdowns as Clairemont (2-4, 1-0) gained 303 total yards in a romp over Marian (0-6, 0-1). Chieftain quarterback John Price completed four of nine passes for 80 yards and added 65 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Alfredo Tinoco caught two passes for 70 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown from Price.

City Western League

La Jolla 49, Mission Bay 8--E.J. Watson, the county’s leading rusher, went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season with a 180-yard, three-touchdown performance at Mission Bay. Watson has 1,070 yards and 13 touchdowns for No. 6 La Jolla, which improved to 6-0, 1-0.

Viking quarterback Andy Anello passed for 99 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score. Alex Brown, who had been out with a shoulder injury, scored on a 58-yard pass from Anello and a four-yard run. Mission Bay quarterback Andy Guyader completed 10 of 18 passes for 109 yards.

Kearny 21, University 12--The Komets (6-0, 1-0) continued to fly, beating University City (3-2, 0-1) at Mesa College. Kearny’s James Curtis, the county’s leading scorer, ran for 186 yards and one touchdown. Teddy Mack added 121 yards and a touchdown for the 10th-ranked Komets. University City’s Paul Turner scored on a five-yard run in the third quarter after Kearny had built a 21-0 lead.

Palomar League

Fallbrook 28, Orange Glen 12--Orange Glen’s Omar Navarro threw three interceptions. One was returned 15 yards by David Shackelford for a touchdown, as the eighth-ranked Patriots fell to 3-2-1, 0-2-1. Navarro completed nine of 24 for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Fallbrook improved to 4-2, 2-1.

Torrey Pines 7, Poway 3--Kevin Dalzell scored the only touchdown on a six-yard run in the second quarter. Josh Stern led Torrey Pines (5-1, 3-0) with 65 yards on 16 carries. Damion Richey ran for 130 yards on 21 carries for Poway (0-6, 0-3).

Mt. Carmel 21, San Dieguito 7--Homecoming for Mt. Carmel (1-5, 1-2) was made memorable by Marlin Carey, who carried the ball 28 times and gained 253 yards, scoring all three of Mt. Carmel’s touchdowns. Mt. Carmel led at halftime, 14-7. Carey’s final touchdown run of 62 yards came in the fourth quarter with his team protecting a seven-point lead. San Dieguito fell to 1-4-1, 0-2-1.

Nonleague

El Capitan 40, Monte Vista 0--Junior running back/kicker Eric Rockhold accounted for half of the point total, scoring two touchdowns, kicking a 34-yard field goal and five extra points. He also ran 14 times for 121 yards. As a team, El Capitan (3-2-1) ran for 308 yards and passed for 47. Monte Vista fell to 3-3.

USDHS 35, Patrick Henry 8--Chris Lewis ran for 94 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries and Chris Mattix rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown in 11 carries for fourth-ranked USDHS (6-0). Dons’ quarterback Mike Sexton was nine of 18 for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He threw a 16-yarder to Chris Rowe and a 16-yarder to Mike Hall. Patrick Henry fell to 2-3-1.
