PREP ROUNDUP : No. 2 Rosary Wins in Tennis, Edging No. 3 Santa Margarita

Rosary, the second-ranked team in Southern Section’s Division 2-A, edged third-ranked Santa Margarita, 87-81, in games after the teams split 18 sets in an Angelus League girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Coto de Caza.

Joyce Cruz, who has lost only one set this year, swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, for Rosary (12-3-1, 5-0 in league). Mandy Gomez also swept at No. 2 singles for Rosary.

Heidi Garmon and Tiffany Brown swept at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3, for Santa Margarita (12-3, 3-2).

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Foothill 15, Santa Ana Valley 3--Amanda Parson improved her record to 48-0 for Foothill (12-4, 7-0).

In Olympic League girls’ tennis:

Orange Lutheran 12, Whittier Christian 6--Freshman Lori Wright swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for host Orange Lutheran (9-4, 4-0). Wright has lost only two of 39 sets this season and remains unbeaten in league play.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Beach 13, Estancia 5--Winsom Falcone and Ashley Smith each swept in singles for visiting Laguna Beach (12-4, 5-1), which avenged an earlier loss to Estancia (11-5, 5-1) and moved into a first-place tie with the Eagles. Laguna Beach is ranked eighth in Division 3-A and Estancia seventh.

In South Coast League girls’ tennis:

Capistrano Valley 11, Dana Hills 7--Page Bartelt swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1, for Capistrano Valley (12-1, 5-0), ranked second in Division 4-A. Dana Hills, ranked fifth in 4-A, is 11-2, 4-1.

Irvine 15, San Clemente 3--Mildia Schiniaia swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and Alessandra Schiniaia swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles for host Irvine (7-2, 3-2).

In Angelus League water polo:

Santa Margarita 6, St. John Bosco 5--John Reynard scored the game-winning goal, his fifth of the game, on a man-advantage situation with 37 seconds remaining for visiting Santa Margarita (5-10, 1-3). It was the Eagles’ first league victory in the program’s two-year history.
