COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Long Beach Upsets Golden West for Title

Golden West, the top-ranked water polo team in the state, lost its first game of the season Friday when No. 2 Long Beach defeated the Rustlers, 12-11, to win the South Coast Conference title at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Long Beach (26-3, 6-0 in conference) has lost only to Golden West this season, including a 4-3 sudden death defeat last Saturday in the championship of the Cypress Tournament.

Peter van Dorp scored four goals for Golden West (23-1, 5-1).

In another South Coast Conference water polo game:

Fullerton 19, El Camino 7--Four goals by Chad Beeler and three each by Kevin Joyce and Mark Allmon gave the Hornets a 12-0 halftime lead. Joyce finished with a game-high six goals as Fullerton (15-14, 4-2) moved above the .500 mark.

In Orange Empire Conference water polo:

Grossmont 17, Rancho Santiago 11--Visiting Grossmont (20-7, 6-0) clinched its second consecutive conference title with the victory at Rancho Santiago.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Golden West (12-0, 5-0) needed only 46 minutes to post a 15-0, 15-1, 15-7 victory, increasing its conference winning streak to 59 matches. The Dons fell to 1-9, 0-4.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Orange Coast 0, Golden West 0--Clint Larson had 11 saves for host Golden West (7-6-4, 2-2-3) to record his third consecutive shutout and seventh of the season. Ken Langworthy had five saves for OCC (7-3-7, 4-0-3), which is one point ahead of second-place Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley 2, Riverside 1--Frank Pace and Keith Rosenberg scored first-half goals and Aaron Ryan made seven saves for visiting Irvine Valley (10-2-2, 5-2).

Fullerton 3, Cypress 0--After a scoreless first half, Henry Crompton scored two goals and Alberto Verduzco added another for host Fullerton (8-5-3, 3-4) in the second half.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Cypress 8, Golden West 0--Stacy Darin and Laurie Wilson had three goals each for host Cypress (7-2-1, 4-2-1). Wilson has scored 13 goals this season. Golden West (0-9, 0-7) trailed, 1-0, at the half.

Irvine Valley 3, Long Beach City 1--Kymm Maniscalco scored two goals and Jeanette Eddy scored one for visiting Irvine Valley (2-11, 2-5).
