Kearny 41, Mission Bay 0--James Curtis, the fourth-leading rusher in the county with 940 yards entering, rushed 20 times for 134 and four touchdowns to help ninth-ranked Kearny (7-0, 2-0) defeat Mission Bay (2-4, 0-2). Teammate Teddy Mack added 100 yards in 11 carries and Manny Henderson 43 yards in six carries.

Kearny used two quarterbacks--Billy Baker (three for seven, 52 yards and one touchdown) and sophomore Sam Norris (four for six, 66 yards). Defensive standouts for the Komets included Henderson (interception) and Rashad Wright (three sacks).

Avocado League

Rancho Bernardo 28, Carlsbad 25--Carlsbad had first-and-goal on the four, lost eight yards on a quarterback sack, and then Tarik Williams and Brent Sausen knocked away passes in the end zone on the final two plays to preserve the victory for Rancho Bernardo (4-3, 2-2).

Pete Keleher rushed for two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 4:19 left, and Griffin Fontanella rushed for one touchdown and passed 21 yards for another. Brian Byrne rushed for a touchdown and connected with Matt Olney for a score--Olney also rushed for a touchdown--for Carlsbad (2-5, 0-4). Carlsbad’s Mike Jensen had a 27-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Escondido 13, Oceanside 6--Escondido’s Mike Frank, a one-man show this night, kicked a school-record 49-yard field goal in the second quarter. Frank also made two catches for 34 yards, punted six times for 219 yards, made two of three field goal attempts and assisted on three tackles. Teammate Lance Lawton rushed for 54 yards including a one-yard touchdown. Escondido (4-3, 3-1) recorded six sacks. Oceanside fell to 3-4, 1-3.

El Camino 44, Ramona 0--Second-ranked El Camino (6-1, 4-0) recorded its fifth shutout of the season. Ramona fell to 0-7, 0-4.

City Central League

San Diego 8, Madison 7--Facing its first defeat with 9 1/2 minutes left, San Diego got a 26-yard scoring pass from Victor Ledon to John Espinal to pull within one. Mel Hernandez (74 yards in 12 carries) then gave the Cavers (6-0-1, 2-0) the victory with a two-point conversion run. Madison (0-7, 0-2) had gone on top with a three-yard by Danny Rivera in the second quarter.

City Eastern League

Morse 70, Patrick Henry 7--Morse’s Gary Taylor rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries for sixth-ranked Morse (5-2, 2-0). Taylor also returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and threw a 70-yard pass to Dwayne Bostic for another touchdown. Conan Smith added 103 yards and four touchdowns in six carries. Only 12 other teams in section history have scored more points than Morse’s 70. Zedric Martin had 16 carries for 60 yards for Patrick Henry (2-4-1, 0-1).

City Harbor League

St. Augustine 20, Clairemont 13--Alfredo Tinoco caught four passes for 68 yards in a losing effort for Clairemont (2-5, 1-1). The Chieftains’ John Price rushed six times for 48 yards and two touchdowns. St. Augustine improved to 3-3-1, 1-0.

Coronado 25, Marian 0--Quarterback Chris Bright rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns in 13 carries and was six of 12 passing for 68 yards to lead Coronado (5-1-1, 1-0-1) over Marian (0-7, 0-2). Coronado had 220 yards rushing and limited Marian to 40 total offense. It was the Islanders’ second shutout of the season.

Metro Conference

Chula Vista 35, Bonita Vista 6--Lamar Bailey scored two touchdowns and rushed for 178 yards on 24 carries to lead the Spartans (5-2, 4-0) to their fourth consecutive victory. Johnny Robinson ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns in 12 carries, and Paul Reyes had a 45-yard interception return. Bonita Vista scored with less than two minutes remaining, on a one-yard run by Frank Peralta. Chula Vista had 436 rushing yards in 56 carries. Bonita Vista fell to 1-5-1, 1-3.

Palomar League

Torrey Pines 9, Rancho Buena Vista 7--Torrey Pines (6-1, 4-0) stopped No. 7 RBV (3-4, 2-2) four times on fourth down inside the 20-yard line to hang on for the victory. All the scoring took place in the first quarter as Ryan Lynch kicked a 21-yard field goal, and Brian Batson rushed for seven yards. Ragan Jackson, who carried 16 times for 106 yards, scored from six yards for RBV. Torrey Pines also had the ball inside the 10 but failed to push it into the end zone. Torrey Pines outgained RBV, 245-211.

Vista 21, San Dieguito 8--Chato Jackson rushed 31 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns, on runs of one, nine and 15 yards, to lead No. 1 Vista (7-0, 4-0). Eric Jencks completed eight of 15 passes for 114 yards, and Morgan Knox had two interceptions for the Panthers. Brian Brenner scored for San Dieguito (1-5-1, 0-3-1).

Fallbrook 58, Mt. Carmel 0--Quarterback John Dutton completed 11 of 21 passes for 157 yards to lead Fallbrook’s rout. Tim Pearson began the scoring with a 14-yard run. Craig Person had touchdown runs of three and two yards. Jimmy Guido also scored two touchdowns, one on a nine-yard run and the other on a 28-yard interception return. Mt. Carmel fell to 1-6, 1-3.

Orange Glen 28, Poway 24--Orange Glen (4-2-1, 1-2-1) bolted to a 21-10 halftime lead as Shanta Chaloux rushed for scores of seven and three yards and Jason Carroll scored from eight yards as Orange Glen (4-2-1, 1-2-1) bolted to a 21-10 halftime lead and hung on for its first league victory. Damian Richey had an 86-yard kickoff return for Poway (0-8, 0-4), which lost its fifth game by seven or fewer points.

Nonleague

La Jolla 20, Mira Mesa 19--No. 5 La Jolla edged Mira Mesa to remain undefeated at 7-0. The Marauders fell to 4-3.

Helix 28, Valhalla 13--Chris Baker rushed 19 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns for Helix (4-2-1). Greg Wilbur completed six of 13 passes for 81 yards. Adam Bright caught four of those for 67 yards and one touchdown. Keith Price rushed 19 times for 95 yards and a touchdown for Valhalla (3-4).
