TENNIS ROUNDUP : Next U.S. Davis Cup Match in Florida

Next month’s Davis Cup quarterfinal between the United States and Czechoslovakia will be played on an outdoor hard court in Ft. Myers, Fla., the U.S. Tennis Assn. announced Tuesday.

Team lineups were expected to be named within the next two weeks for the March 27-29 match at the Sonesta Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa.

The United States reached the quarterfinal with a 5-0 sweep of Argentina last weekend at Kohala Coast, Hawaii. Czechoslovakia also swept its first-round tie, defeating Belgium, 5-0, at Prague.

Third-seeded Derrick Rostagno of Brentwood turned things around in a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Rodolphe Gilbert of France, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, in the first round of the Volvo San Francisco tournament.

Eighth-seeded Jimmy Conners beat Bryan Shelton, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-3 in the evening’s final first-round match.

Former Stanford star Jonathan Stark defeated Germany’s Patrick Baur, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in another first-round match.

Another former Stanford standout, Jeff Tarango, also advanced to the second round. Tarango beat Argentine Davis Cup player Javier Frana, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3.

France’s Thierry Champion, seeded seventh, rallied in the third set to beat Patrick Kuhnen, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, in a 2-hour, 38-minute match.
