Charlie Joiner, the former San Diego Charger...

Charlie Joiner, the former San Diego Charger receiver and receivers coach, joined the Buffalo Bills as receivers coach. Joiner, 44, played in 239 games with Houston, Cincinnati and San Diego in an 18-year career that ended in 1987, when he joined the Chargers coaching staff.

When he retired, Joiner held NFL records with 750 catches and 12,146 yards. Both were broken by Seattle’s Steve Largent.

Torrey Pines’ Andy Hauser, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound center had verbally committed to play at Montana State. Hauser had narrowed his choices to Montana State and Fresno State.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Center Rochelle Lightner scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Point Loma Nazarene over Azusa Pacific, 85-69, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Christy Stevens added 24 points and five assists for PLNC (16-6, 4-2).

University City graduate Amy Cleveland led Claremont-Mudd to a 59-54 nonconference victory over UC San Diego. For UCSD (9-8), Lisa Beaver scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and teammate Kathleen Alvarez added 11 points. Claremont-Mudd improved to 15-4.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene’s Rusty Fallin scored 30 of his 41 game-high points in the second half, including 15 of the final 21 points, to lead the Crusaders to a 111-103 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Azusa Pacific. PLNC trailed 48-47 at the half, but outscored APU 17-7 in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second half to set the tone in the second half. PLNC improved to 12-11, 3-3; APU dropped to 12-12, 3-3.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Nicole Storto led San Diego State to a 6-3 victory over UC Irvine in a nonconference match at SDSU (2-0). At No. 2 singles, Storto defeated Kelly Goldsborough, 6-3, 6-1 then teamed with Patrick Henry graduate Sue Hawke for a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ali Yoshimoto and Cory Crigger.

Storto and Hawke are ranked fourth in the country in doubles. The Aztecs swept all three doubles matches and won three in singles against UCI (1-2).

Eighteenth-ranked University of San Diego evened its record at 1-1 with a 9-0 victory over UC San Diego in a nonconfernce match. Tracy Ishii won 6-0, 6-1 over Robin Canaba at No. 1 singles.

MEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene men’s team defeated Redlands, 5-4. Mattias Rendefors and Darin Bassett’s doubles victory over Mark Mallet and Sean Comadena, 6-4, 6-3, was the difference for the Crusaders in their season-opener.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Defending NCAA champion Long Beach State took care of SDSU in three consecutive: 15-7, 15-6, 15-1. John Hyden’s 14 kills and Rob Thomas’ 12 kills led the Aztecs (1-6, 0-4 in WIVA). Long Beach improved to 4-0, 2-0.

UC San Diego defeated La Verne, 15-6, 15-9, 17-15, for its first victory of the season. Steve Kremser had 12 kills for UCSD and Bruce Williams added nine.

BASEBALL

Occidental broke open the game in the fifth inning with five runs en route to a 7-5 nonconference victory over Point Loma Nazarene (0-2). Solo home runs by Crusaders Miguel Abascal and Jack Campbell in the fifth and seventh innings weren’t enough to catch Occidental (2-0), which got a hit from every player in its starting lineup.

UC Irvine’s five-run eighth inning iced the nonconference victory over USD (0-1). Kevin Herdee was two for three for the Toreros, including a double. UCI improved to 2-1.
