DIVISION IV / V ROUNDUP : Laguna Beach’s Second-Half Surge Buries Cathedral, 77-57

Brad Berberian scored 10 of his 18 points in the third quarter, leading Laguna Beach to a 77-57 victory over Cathedral in a Division IV-AA first-round playoff game Friday night at Cathedral.

The Artists (16-10) extended a 30-24 halftime lead by outscoring the Phantoms, 30-18, in the third quarter.

Eric Fegraus added 15 for Laguna Beach, which will face Pius X next Friday.

In Division IV-A:

Whittier Christian 65, Riverside Notre Dame 57--Mark Berokoff scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in a 25-12 second quarter for Whittier Christian (12-12), which will meet Verbum Dei in the next round Tuesday night.

Jeff Rutter added 18 points, 12 on three-pointers, for Whittier Christian. Mike McCurty scored 18 points for Notre Dame.

Orange Lutheran 75, Cantwell Sacred Heart 67--Jeff Courvoisier scored 20 points and had seven rebounds for the Lancers (14-12). Mike Chan led Cantwell Sacred Heart (9-13) with 28 points.

Orange Lutheran plays Calvary Chapel Tuesday in the second round.

In Division V-AA:

Capistrano Valley Christian 45, L.A. Lutheran 36--Troy Rodarmel and Jeff Jennings each scored 13 points, and Mark Underwood had nine rebounds, seven blocked shots and eight points for Capistrano Valley Christian (13-12).

The Eagles will play host to Brentwood in the second round Tuesday night.

L.A. Lutheran concludes its season 16-5.

Brethren Christian 74, Leffingwell Christian 37--Chiron Hart scored 20 points and Tim Osborn added 15 for top-seeded Brethren Christian (23-2), which will meet St. Margaret’s in a second-round game Tuesday night.

St. Margaret’s 66, San Pedro Mary Star 56--Ravi Murthyunjaya, Damian Raibon and Brian Askew scored 16 points each to lead St. Margaret’s (14-7). San Pedro Mary Star finishes 12-13.

St. Margaret’s meets top-seeded Brethren Christian Tuesday night.

In Division V-A:

Liberty Christian 100, Southeast Lutheran 56--Dave Kellams scored 27 of his 29 points in the second half for Liberty Christian (17-6). He also had 13 rebounds.

Teammates Toby Curto scored 23 points and Dave Bahnsen had eight assists. Aaron Brady scored 27 points for Southeast Lutheran (11-10).

Liberty Christian will play Bethel Christian Lancaster Tuesday in the second round.

Rio Hondo Prep 89, St. Michael’s 68--Jon Grobler scored 34 points and Jocques Wright added 25 for St. Michael’s (10-12).
