Flanegin calls this his most talented and experienced team, and the Mustangs would like to repeat as Pacific Coast League champions and break a two-year jinx of losing in the first round of the playoffs. El Toro eliminated Trabuco Hills, 1-0, in 14 innings in 1990, and last season, the Mustangs lost to Chino Don Lugo, 2-1. Lunceford, who will play softball at Creighton next season, was the team’s most valuable player and earned first-team all-county honors at catcher. Lunceford hit .427 last season and drove in 29 runs in 27 games. Burkman, the league MVP last season, struck out 166 in 119 innings last season and posted a 0.53 earned-run average. Also returning is shortstop Rodriguez, who hit .300 and didn’t commit an error in the Mustangs’ final 10 games. “We can repeat this season, and since all the seniors want to go out winners, I don’t see complacency causing a problem,” Flanegin said. “We don’t talk about winning CIF, we just set goals day by day and take it game by game.”
