PREPS

The week began with six games remaining on the Pacific League baseball schedule and what appeared to be a two-team race for the championship between Pasadena and Arcadia.

Pasadena defeated Arcadia, 6-5, Friday to enter the week in first place with a 6-2-1 record. Arcadia was second at 6-3.

Hoover and Glendale, meanwhile, are battling for third place and a spot in the Southern Section playoffs. After a 10-7 victory over Crescenta Valley Friday, Hoover entered the week 4-4-1.

Glendale beat Muir, 10-6, in eight innings Friday to improve its league record to 4-5.

Marc Ward has been named girls’ basketball coach at Crescenta Valley, replacing Scott Sisson.

Ward, 34, worked as an assistant at perennially powerful Morningside High from 1986-91. He helped guide the Monarchs to consecutive state championships in 1990 and 1991.

Hoover’s softball team improved its record to 15-2 by winning the Carpinteria tournament last weekend.

Nancy Evans gave up two hits and had 20 strikeouts as Hoover defeated Pasadena Poly, 2-0, to win the title.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team concluded its season with losses to Pierce and Santa Barbara, giving the Vaqueros a final record of 11-22 and 6-14 in the Western State Conference.

The Glendale men’s and women’s tennis teams begin play in the Western State Conference playoffs today at Pierce College.

The Vaqueros will participate in the Southern California Regionals May 7 with hopes of gaining a berth in the state finals May 14 at a site to be determined.

The Vaquero men’s and women’s track teams will participate in the Southern California Preliminaries May 2 at Santa Barbara in an attempt to qualify for the Southern California Finals May 9.

This year’s state championships will be held May 15-16 at Long Beach City College.

COLLEGES

Occidental men’s and women’s track teams begin competition in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships today at Caltech.

The Tiger women, led by sprinter Jacqui Dent, have won 13 consecutive SCIAC titles. Occidental lost an SCIAC dual meet for the first time earlier this season against Pomona-Pitzer, but could still win the conference championship.

The Tiger men last won an SCIAC track title in 1990.

The Occidental baseball team will conclude its season this weekend when the Tigers play a three-game SCIAC series against Claremont.

Occidental lost two of three games against Pomona-Pitzer last weekend, dropping its record to 13-20 and 5-13 in the SCIAC.

Tiger senior first baseman Mike Bonetto is batting .333 with six home runs and 33 runs batted in. He has 12 stolen bases in 13 attempts and has not committed an error in 346 chances.

The Occidental softball team entered the week winless and concludes its season with SCIAC games Friday against Claremont and Saturday at Whittier.

Occidental fell to 0-26 last week when the Tigers blew a 6-4 lead in he final inning.

Despite the Tigers’ travails, sophomore outfielder Jill Normington has been a standout. Normington is batting .360 and has 16 stolen bases in 20 attempts.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Kevin Deitch, Hoover--Deitch had two hits, drove in a run and pitched two innings of scoreless relief to lead the Tornadoes to a 10-7 victory over Crescenta Valley.

Deitch’s effort kept the Tornadoes in the hunt for a Southern Section playoff berth.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Mike Bonetto, Occidental--Bonetto, a senior first baseman, had six hits in 15 at-bats last weekend during the Tigers’ three-game series with Pomona-Pitzer.

Bonetto hit a home run and also had two doubles in extending his hitting streak to eight games.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Gregg Zaun--Zaun, a former All-Southern Section catcher at St. Francis High, is playing for Frederick (Va.), the Baltimore Orioles’ affiliate in the Class-A Carolina League.

Zaun, a Glendale resident, batted .274 with four home runs and 51 RBIs last season for Kane County (Ill.) in the Class-A Midwest League.

MISCELLANY

Registration has begun for the Glendale Public Parks tennis tournament May 19-23 at Fremont Park in Glendale. A junior tournament will be held May 30-31 and June 6-7. Information: (818) 548-3796.
