OUTLOOK
Whitacre took Villa Park to the league championship in his first season at the school, turning the program around from 7-13 to 14-6. The Spartans return all their starters, and Whitacre is very optimistic for a repeat of last season’s success. “Last year, we dreamed of a championship,” he said. “This year, we intend to defend one with everything we have. Our dream is to repeat.” Last season was Villa Park’s first winning one in nine years and only its second league championship in 30 years. The Spartans return six of their top eight players, losing Tara Earl and Ashley Thurston to graduation. The Spartans plan on defending their title with defense, running a full-court press throughout each game. Skehan is one of the league’s best defenders and a potential all-county player. Last season, she averaged a league-leading eight steals. Whitacre also looks to Miyake and Jacquot to help lead from the guard positions. Miyake is a constant three-point threat and handles the ball well.
