Highlights

Esperanza won its second consecutive league title. The Aztecs were co-champions with Los Alamitos in 1991-92. They saw to it that they wouldn’t have to share the title again by beating the Griffins twice. Esperanza’s Marcus Jones made a basket and a steal in the last 20 seconds to clinch a 61-53 victory in the first game between the teams. The Aztecs dominated Los Alamitos, 71-60, in the second game to clinch a tie for the title. Mark Thimgan had 14 points and 10 rebounds in that game. He was later named the league’s most valuable player. The Aztecs’ Mark Hill was named coach of the year. The Aztecs wrapped up the championship with two more victories, giving them a 19-1 league mark over two seasons. . . . Esperanza defeated Orange in the first round of the Division I-A playoffs, then lost to Paramount. Los Alamitos defeated Century, then lost to Loyola in the I-A playoffs. . . . Katella had its best season since 1986-87, when it was the No. 2-ranked team in Orange County. Coach Tom Danley moved within two victories of 500 for his career. The Knights beat Los Alamitos once and came within a second of knocking off Esperanza. In the II-A playoffs, Katella lost to Magnolia, a team which the Knights had beaten, 78-43, earlier in the season. . . . Katella’s Brian Carlson averaged 19.8 points to lead the league in scoring. Los Alamitos’ Steve Carbone was second, averaging 18.4.
