Chevalier Nearing Two CSUN Records

Andre Chevalier, a senior guard at Cal State Northridge, must average 18 points in the Matadors’ final four games to break the school career scoring record of 1,301 points set by Jim Malkin from 1959-62.

Chevalier has 118 assists, 11 shy of the school season record set by Darren Matsubara during the 1988-89 season. Chevalier already is Northridge’s career leader with 464 assists, 171 steals and 377 free throws.

Chevalier came within three points of matching his career high with 25 points against Grand Canyon on Tuesday night. He also equaled career highs with 11 assists and six rebounds.

With a little more cooperation from teammates, the senior from Cleveland High might have challenged the single-game assist record of 15 set by Keith Gibbs in 1990. On several occasions, Chevalier came bolting through the lane and zipped a pass to an open teammate, only to watch the ball slip away and bounce out of bounds.

Against Grand Canyon, Chevalier scored or assisted on nine of Northridge’s last 11 points in the final 1 minute 24 seconds as the Matadors held on to win, 95-84.

Northridge Coach Pete Cassidy said Chevalier “took over” when the team needed it. Asked about it, Chevalier responded, “I didn’t want to lose. I just did what I could for us to win.”
