HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Chaminade Rallies Past Montclair Prep

John Gunn’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth drove in Gabe Grecion with the winning run Thursday as Chaminade rallied to defeat Montclair Prep, 9-8, in a nonleague baseball game.

The Eagles (5-5), who snapped a three-game losing streak, trailed, 8-3, but parlayed three hits, two walks, two hit batters and an error into a six-run sixth.

Joel Orme, Casey Cote and Brandon Gray each had two hits for Chaminade. Eli Reichline had two hits and Darryl Dent scored three runs for Montclair Prep (6-3).

Buena 10, Oxnard 0--Jason Kimball was four for five, including a double and a triple, in leading the Bulldogs (7-3, 3-1) to the Channel League victory.

James Melcher added three hits and three RBIs and Mark Stehle pitched a four-hitter for Buena.

St. John Bosco 9, Crespi 2--Celt right-hander Ron Jones (4-1) took the loss in a St. Paul tournament pool play game at Valley College. Rich Gonzalez and Chris Crawley each had two hits for Crespi (7-3-1).

Jerry Bueno was four for five with two runs and an RBI to lead the Braves (8-3).

Oak Park 5, Carpinteria 2--Chris Gorlitz (1-0-1) allowed three hits over six innings, striking out five, to register his first victory in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.

Eric Ruhle had four stolen bases for Oak Park (6-1-1, 2-0), which had just three hits but benefited from six walks and a hit batsman.

St. Bonaventure 5, Nordhoff 4--Junior third baseman Jake Brown was two for two with two doubles and two runs scored for the visiting Seraphs (6-5) in a nonleague game.

Royal 13, Agoura 5--Adrian Mendoza had three hits and Maki Kramer allowed four hits over five innings to get the victory for Royal in a Marmonte League game at Agoura. Kramer, who struck out five, also had two hits for the Highlanders (5-3, 2-1).

Kevin Sass (three hits), Chris Cicuto (two hits, including a double) and Matt Gershon (two hits) led Agoura (2-8, 0-4).

Channel Islands 4, Camarillo 2--Rene Sanchez and Javier Rios each had three hits for visiting Channel Islands (8-6, 2-2) in the Marmonte League game.

Nacho Godinez (1-1) picked up the victory, going four innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Jake Spahr and Matt Buttell were each two for four with a double for the Scorpions (7-4, 0-4).

Sylmar 9, Olympus (Utah) 3--With the score tied, 3-3, in the fourth inning of the Bishop Gorman tournament game in Las Vegas, Art Diaz put Sylmar ahead to stay with a two-run triple as the Spartans scored six times. Every starter had at least one hit for Sylmar (8-3).

Mario Cervantes (2-0) struck out four of the six batters he faced.

Bonita Vista 5, Taft 3--Nick Andrisano hit a solo home run in the sixth for Taft, but the Toreadors could not overcome a first inning in which they committed three errors and gave up four unearned runs in a first-round game of the Gael Easter Classic at Las Vegas High.

Dusty Cook (3-2) took the loss for Taft, although he pitched well, giving up five hits and striking out four batters in six innings.

Paraclete 11, Bishop 7--Dan O’Gara went four for five with two RBIs and Dennis Winchell added three hits and three RBIs for Paraclete (4-6, 2-1) in a High Desert League game.

Sam Price (1-1) earned the victory, allowing two hits in 3 1/3 innings. J.T. Summerfelt belted his first home run for Bishop (0-2 in league play).

Bosco Tech 10, Bell-Jeff 9 (8 innings)--The host Tigers won a wild St. Paul tournament pool play game, with the winning run scoring as Bosco Tech attempted a suicide squeeze with one out. The batter missed the pitch and Emilio Gutierrez was caught in a rundown, but third baseman Jason Paris’ throw hit Gutierrez in the back and he scored.

John Pawlik had two doubles for the Guards (1-5). Teammates Richard Szeptycki and Dave Matekel each added two hits.

L.A. Lutheran 6, Providence 2--Patrick Sitter had three hits and an RBI, and Rick Lehr doubled, tripled and drove in two runs for visiting L.A. Lutheran (5-2) in a nonleague game.

Santa Paula 11, Bishop Diego 9--Joseph Jauregui had three hits, including a double and triple, and scored two runs, and Robert Newman added a double, triple and two runs batted in for host Santa Paula (3-5-1), which took an 11-2 lead into the seventh inning of the nonleague game.

David Qualls (2-2) allowed only three hits through six innings and struck out 11, but tired in the seventh and needed help from Marc Fallini.

Poly 16, Ramona 6--The Parrots (6-2) won their first game at the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas.

Chatsworth 4, Boulder City 0--The Chancellors (8-2) blanked Boulder City in their first game of the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas.

Hart 7, Burroughs 4--Hart improved to 3-0 in Foothill League play.

GOLF

DeBell tournament--Steve Farris of Hart fired a three-over 74 to lead the Indians to the title in the 24-team event at DeBell Golf Course in Burbank.

Hart finished with a four-man total of 316 to claim top honors for the third consecutive year. Agoura finished second at 321.

Scott Scozzola of Notre Dame, whose father Phil is the head pro at DeBell, shot 72 to claim medalist honors. Spencer Hill shot 78 for Hart, whose B team finished sixth.

SOFTBALL

St. Genevieve 12, Serra 4--Stacie Champy (2-4) had three hits, scored three runs, knocked in four and scattered four hits and struck out seven in a complete-game victory for host St. Genevieve (3-7, 1-2). Teammate Julie Lopez added three hits and four runs.

Moorpark 5, Calabasas 1--Mindy Penrod fired a one-hitter, struck out seven and had two hits for Moorpark in a Frontier League game at Calabasas.

Cher Tinnerello had two hits and Christine Gutierrez hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to break the game open for the Musketeers (7-0, 4-0).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Simi Valley, 15-7, 15-3, 15-5--Eric Carlsen had nine kills, Scott Hambly had seven and Josh White added 22 assists for host Royal (6-3, 6-1) in a Marmonte League sweep.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Ventura 109, Rio Mesa 59, Santa Barbara 32--Noah Walsh won three events and Aaron Davis was victorious in two for Ventura in the Channel League meet at Rio Mesa.

Teammate Ramsey Jay won the 100 in 10.7 and anchored the Cougars’ 400 relay team to a winning time of 43.7.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Buena 132, San Marcos 42, Hueneme 10--Amy Van Atta and Stacy Hebert each won two events for Buena (4-0, 4-0) in the Channel League meet at San Marcos.

Van Atta ran 2 minutes 25.6 seconds in the 800 and 5:33.6 in the 1,600. Hebert timed 16.4 in the 100 high hurdles and 47.4 in the 300 lows for the Bulldogs, who defeated eight-time defending league champion Rio Mesa on Tuesday.
