PREP ROUNDUP : La Quinta Tips Arroyo Grande to Win Title

Linda Rodriguez drove in Jaclyn Fredrickson with a one-out single in the fourth inning as La Quinta beat Arroyo Grande, 1-0, Saturday, winning the championship of the San Luis Obispo Tiger softball tournament.

Kelly McLaughlin (6-2) pitched a two-hitter, striking out four.

In the semifinals, La Quinta (10-4) beat Morro Bay, 8-1, as Jennifer Hollinger struck out nine.

In nonleague softball:

Rosary 4-4, Buena Park 3-2--Nicola Walsh (5-0) won both games for visiting Rosary, striking out 12. She also had two triples in the first game, and had four hits and three runs scored in the doubleheader.

Shannon Sportsman also had four hits, with a double and a home run, and Regina Martin had a double, a triple, two singles, and the game-winning RBI in the first game for Rosary (8-3).

In nonleague baseball:

Fountain Valley 20-7, Artesia 2-0 (first game 5, mercy)--Geoff Wilson and Deric Yanigisawa hit grand slams to key a 16-run second inning in the first game for host Fountain Valley. Dan Hoppie hit another grand slam in the fourth inning, as the Barons had 14 hits.

In the second game, Chris Ponchak hit a homer and three pitchers combined on a two-hitter. Artesia had four hits in the two games.

Yanigisawa had four hits and six RBIs in the two games.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Mater Dei 100, San Diego University High 70--Mike Ciecek won the 500 freestyle in 5:30.28 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.96 for Mater Dei (3-3).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Mater Dei 93, San Diego University High 77--Kim Wilson swam a personal best 2:12.15 in the 200 freestyle for Mater Dei (2-4).

In nonleague volleyball:

Santa Margarita 3, Ocean View 2--Justin DeBlasio had 12 kills as visiting Santa Margarita rallied from a two-game deficit to win its first match of the year, 3-15, 12-15, 15-9, 15-13, 15-10.
