ROUNDUP : Maggiora Follows in Brother’s Footsteps With No-Hitter

Saugus High senior John Maggiora faced two batters over the minimum while pitching a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Burroughs in a Foothill League game Tuesday at Burroughs.

The no-hitter is the first for Saugus (12-4-1, 4-1 in league play) since Maggiora’s brother, Doug, pitched one in 1991.

Maggiora struck out three and walked none. He hit a batter in the sixth and Saugus committed an error in the seventh.

VOLLEYBALL

Harvard-Westlake def. Loyola, 12-15, 15-13, 16-14, 15-8--Harvard, ranked second in Southern Section Division I, defeated top-ranked Loyola, in a Mission League match. Matt Sebree had 29 kills for the Wolverines (11-1) and Seth Rodsky added 22. Court Young had 60 assists. The victory avenged Harvard’s earlier loss to the Cubs (12-1). Both teams are 8-1 in league play.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 1, Royal 0--Sara Griffin pitched a perfect game, leading Simi Valley (12-1, 6-1) in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Park. Griffin, who struck out 12, has pitched one other no-hitter and eight shutouts this season.

Nicole Newhart singled to score Jenny Conmay in the fourth.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

The Master’s 8, CS Dominguez Hills 7--The Mustangs (12-26-2), an NAIA team, upset the NCAA’s No. 2-ranked Division II team at Master’s. Mark Vail (three RBIs) and Kenya Hunt each had two hits, including home runs. Matt Henzie was four for four and David Scott three for three to pace a 15-hit attack. The Toros (30-12) scored four runs in the eighth.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Littlerock 7, Quartz Hill 6--James Jefferson’s two-run triple led a comeback for the Lobos, who scored three runs in the seventh inning of a Golden League game.

Moorpark 4, Santa Paula 3--Travis Ehrlich’s two-run double in the fourth lifted the Musketeers in a Frontier League game.

El Camino Real 2, Kennedy 1--Left-hander Randy Wolf (6-1) struck out eight and walked none for El Camino Real (12-4, 4-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. He also doubled and singled.

Hart 3, Burbank 2--Freshman left-hander Bobby Graves recorded the final out on a ground ball with the tying run on base to preserve the victory for Hart (13-4, 5-0). Eric Spindt (4-3) pitched the first 6 2/3 innings, striking out two while walking none.
