Valdez Runs for Four Touchdowns in Whittier Christian Victory

Nick Valdez scored four touchdowns to lead undefeated Whittier Christian to a 28-14 nonleague victory over Covina Western Christian Friday night at Whittier College.

Valdez scored on two five-yard touchdown runs in the first half and from 21 and 17 yards in the second half. He finished with 195 yards in 26 carries.

Steve Machuca, running mainly in relief of Valdez, added 72 yards in 10 carries.

The Heralds (4-0) gained 277 yards rushing. Quarterback Andrei Roudenko attempted only three passes, completing one to Valdez for five yards.

Whittier Christian got two big defensive plays. Brian Bethke recovered a fumble at the Western Christian 17-yard line leading Whittier Christian to a 6-0 first-quarter lead.

The second came as Western Christian, trailing, 20-6, was driving in the fourth quarter. Jimmy Cuccia picked off a Mike Ferree at the Whittier three-yard line to preserve the lead.

The Herald defense allowed only a 61-yard touchdown pass to Evan Kimber late in the fourth quarter to make it 28-14.
