PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Nash Sparks Calvary Chapel Past Laguna Beach

Ken Nash rushed for 63 yards and two scores to lead Calvary Chapel to a 28-21 nonleague victory over Laguna Beach Saturday night at Newport Harbor High.

Eagle quarterback Waylan Kruse completed 12 of 15 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown to balance the Calvary Chapel attack.

Laguna Beach (1-3) scored first, when Nate Pivaroff hit James Kimball on a nine-yard touchdown pass for a 6-0 lead.

However, Calvary Chapel (3-1) scored the next 28 points.

Nash scored on an eight-yard run 30 seconds into the second quarter. Kruse then hit Aaron Fountain on a 17-yard scoring pass with 25 seconds left in the half for a 15-6 halftime lead.

Nash scored his second touchdown on a six-yard run late in the third quarter for a 21-6 advantage. The Eagles’ final score came on the second play of the fourth quarter, when David Kuhn scored on a four-yard run.

The Artists mounted a comeback that started with a Pivaroff one-yard touchdown run with 6:14 left to play. On Laguna Beach’s next possession, Pivaroff hit Dan Styles for a 15-yard score, putting the Artists seven points behind.

The Artists got one final chance with 19 seconds left, but Pivaroff missed on four consecutive passes to end the game.

Liam McDonagh ran for 80 yards in 17 carries for Laguna Beach. Pivaroff completed seven of 17 passes for 96 yards and two scores.

Santa Ana Valley 24, Dana Hills 10--Dwayne Cherrington rushed for 199 yards in 17 carries and scored two touchdowns for host Santa Ana Valley in the nonleague game at Santa Ana Stadium.

Cherrington, ranked ninth in Orange County in rushing, had touchdown runs of 51 and 49 yards. He gained 155 of his 199 yards in three carries.

Those big plays beat the Dolphins (0-4). Dolphin quarterback Scott Maynard scored from four yards late in the third quarter, capping a 15-play, 65-yard drive and cutting the Falcon lead to seven points.

Santa Ana Valley (2-2) answered with a 39-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jason Parrott. Parrott gained 79 yards in 11 carries.

The night, however, belonged to Cherrington. On third and 23 with the Falcons on their 18, Cherrington carried the ball 55 yards to the Dolphin 27. Five plays later, Ben Almazan kicked a 22-yard field goal, giving the Falcons a 10-3 lead.

Dana Hills’ Laramie Lumley ran for 76 yards in 15 carries. Dana Hills was limited to 55 yards total offense in the first half and 125 for the game.

Long Beach St. Anthony 40, Southern California Christian 10--Eric Reese rushed 10 times for 181 yards and two touchdowns to lead Long Beach St. Anthony to the nonleague victory.

Reese scored from 38 yards on the Saints’ first possession, then ran for an 83-yard score with 2:15 left in the second quarter as St. Anthony (4-0) built a 33-3 halftime lead.

“They are two divisions above us, but it would be a reach to say today was a positive experience for us,” Southern California Christian Coach Bert Esposito said. “We came out a little better in the second half, but it’s tough when you start six sophomores.”

The only highlight for the Flames (1-3) came late in the game when fullback Ken Buhler ran 89 yards for a touchdown with 8:47 remaining.

Buhler finished with 117 yards rushing.

Mike Conley scored from 13 yards with 2:28 left in the first quarter to give the Saints a 12-0 lead. They made it 18-0 when Aaron Decollibus scored from one yard on the first play of the second quarter.

Jeremy Smith’s 34-yard field goal put the Flames on the board with 5:19 left in the half, but Decollibus returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a 25-3 lead.

After Reese ran for the 83-yard touchdown, Brian Walsh ended the St. Anthony scoring when he went in from five yards with 4:24 left in the third quarter.

Neither team was successful passing. Flames quarterback Steve Schinofen completed three of eight for only 17 yards and Joshua Zak was two of six for 20 yards for the Saints.

Both teams combined for more than 200 yards in penalties.

Orange Lutheran 19, Sun Valley Village Christian 13--Orange Lutheran quarterback Joe Juliano rushed for 90 yards in 15 carries and scored a touchdown for the visiting Lancers.

The Lancers scored 19 first-half points and held on for the victory. Village Christian had a chance to win, but quarterback Chris Coleman’s pass on fourth and 12 fell incomplete with less than one minute to play.

Jacob Funk had 89 yards and one touchdown in 24 carries and Ignacio Brache kicked field goals of 35 and 42 yards for Village Christian (1-3).

Orange Lutheran improved to 3-1.
