OUTLOOK

Last year, Pierce spent the better part of his maiden season weaning the Lancers from the zone defenses and controlled offenses of predecessor Steve White. This year, there is a new goal. “I want us to be the highest-scoring team in the league,” Pierce said. “I’m not going to be happy until we score 100, although I’ll be satisfied with 60-70.” To reach that goal, Pierce will depend on either a passing offense of a 1-4 alignment to draw post players outside and post up the guards. How that works depends on the passing and decision-making of Granillo, whom Pierce will play at point guard, and whether Sunny Hills can make its outside shots with some regularity. Another key is whether Nicolas (13 point average) can at least duplicate his all-league season of a year ago. Without size--their tallest player, Christensen, weighs only 170 pounds--Sunny Hills is not going to dominate the boards. It is certain, however, that the Lancers plan to run at every opportunity and won’t dawdle if forced into a set offense. Not if they want to make that 100.
