COMMUNITY COLLEGE NOTEBOOK / STEVE KRESAL : Holmes, Tuinei Make All-State Football Team

Share

Andre Holmes, a defensive back at Rancho Santiago College and and Golden West’s Van Tuinei, a defensive lineman, were selected to the all-state football team.

Holmes, from Orange High, is the only freshman on the defensive team. Tuinei is from Westminster High.

Holmes was also selected as the most valuable defensive player in Region IV, which comprises the 14 teams in the Mission Conference.

Other Orange County players on the Region IV team are: Simon Fuentes (Rancho Santiago, quarterback); Caleb Kemp (Golden West, offensive line); Brandon LaGraffe (Fullerton, offensive line); Edgar Macias (Rancho Santiago, offensive line); Josh Micklos (Fullerton, defensive line); Jason Nevadomsky (Fullerton, linebacker); Andy Osborne (Saddleback, linebacker); Scott Patton (Saddleback, defensive back); Casey Shine (Rancho Santiago, tight end); Ernie Wilson (Rancho Santiago, running back) and Jim Wren (Fullerton, punter).

Dave Ogas, who led Rancho Santiago to a 9-2 record and the Mission Conference Central Division title, was the Region IV coach of the year.

The obvious omission from the Region IV list was OCC running back Jeff Clayton. He gained 1,065 yards and scored 11 touchdowns for OCC.

Shine to sign: Shine has made an oral commitment to Nevada.

Casey said he will fax his letter of intent Wednesday. He caught 22 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games this season.

Shine, from El Modena, starts classes at Nevada in January.

Three-point zoo: The long-range shooting of the Cypress men’s basketball team remains amazing.

The Chargers’ latest stunner came Saturday when they set the college’s single-game mark with 19 three-pointers in 23 attempts in a 95-75 victory over Santa Monica.

The 19 makes (by three players) is an Orange County record. The state doesn’t keep track of such marks. Gil Gonzales was eight for 10, Matt Kenney was six for eight, and Jeff Rutter made five of five against Santa Monica.

Gonzales, a freshman from Orange High, is 79 of 159 this season and is already third on the Cypress single-season list. Kenney, a sophomore from Servite, has made 53 of 116 and Rutter has 41 of 87 so far.

The Chargers (12-4) are 182 of 424 (.429) this season and a sure bet to break the college’s single-season record of 226, set last season.

Necessity is the reason for the Chargers’ frequent use of the outside shot. They have no player taller than 6 feet 4.

Vanishing Rustlers: Golden West’s Tom McClusky, in his first year as coach, also is losing a war of attrition.

Golden West started the season with 15 players on the roster but four players quit.

But in the last two weeks, Golden West (6-8) has lost forward Tyrone Butler (knee), guard Dejuan Matthews (ankle), and forward Darvin Thompson (knee) to injuries.

All three were starters at various times this season and none is assured of being back by Jan. 4, the start of Orange Empire Conference play.

Golden West is left with eight healthy players, including sophomore guard Michael Dean, whom McClusky can’t afford to rest for very long. Dean, averaging 18.6 points, played the final 30 minutes of the Rustlers’ 66-65 victory over Victor Valley on Saturday in the third-place game of the Cypress tournament.

Notes

Cypress’ Sara Works probably will become the Chargers’ all-time scoring leader this week. Works, from Savanna High, has 1,044 points in her career. Works, averaging 25 points, needs 16 to set the mark.
