BOYS’ BASKETBALL / CHAMINADE TOURNAMENT : Yang Steps Forward for Chaminade, 68-60

Senior guard Mike Yang made six free throws in the final minute as Chaminade High outlasted previously undefeated Alhambra, 68-60, Thursday in the semifinals of the Chaminade tournament.

“That’s exactly what we wanted,” Chaminade Coach Jeff Young said. “Mike is one of our captains and he came through when he had to.”

Leading after each of the first three quarters, Alhambra (11-1) couldn’t pull away from the Eagles (7-3). Chaminade will play Marshall (5-4), a 47-42 winner over Calabasas in overtime, in tonight’s championship game.

“We wanted to get to their bench because that is their weakness,” Young said. “Every team has a breaking point, and they broke in the fourth quarter.”

Chaminade outscored the Moors, 27-17, in the fourth quarter, sparked by freshman Justin Stewart’s three-point basket with 2 minutes 46 seconds to play that put Chaminade ahead, 56-54.

Carmine Rossi led Chaminade with 20 points and seven assists.

The Eagles survived early foul trouble and a 17-11 first-quarter deficit to tie the score, 19-19, on a layup by Torey Ellis off a behind-the-back pass from Yang with 6:13 to play in the first half.

Andrew Ho’s driving layup gave the Moors a 31-28 halftime lead.

Marshall 47, Calabasas 42--David He scored 17 points, including four in overtime, for Marshall.

Noel Bloom scored 15 points for Calabasas (3-6).
