The Raiders can’t help but improve on last year’s league mark, and with a solid corps of returnees, Young is confident they will. He hopes his team will be taken lightly. “You always hope you will get (an opponent’s) second pitcher and really make things interesting,” Young said.

The Panthers are the league favorites, but they may get off to a slow start because five of the key returnees are also competing for the Newbury Park basketball team, which is No. 1 in the state in Division III and could be playing into mid-March. One of the basketball players is Fox, The Times’ 1994 Ventura County player of the year.

Barroso and Whitehead are the only returning starters. “We’re going to be so young and inexperienced that I can’t say we are going to be right there banging on the door,” Silva said. “We’ll be competitive, but maybe not enough to make it into the playoffs.”

The Lancers have the best chance to challenge Newbury Park for the league title because of a strong group of seven returning starters. The marquee player is Davenport (9-9, 0.32 ERA), an all-county pitcher last season. “I’ve got a nice blend of experience and newcomers that are adding strength to an already good team,” Walin said.

DeArman and Cathy Davie are the top players, but they are joined by Carlson, a transfer from Phoenix; Perino, from Agoura; and talented freshmen Notaro, King and Chrissy Davie. “Last year we relied on Cathy Davie and Kelly DeArman to do everything,” Gove said. “I think this year we have better depth.”
