University 33, Birmingham 17--Laron Rockett had three receptions for 61 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown, but the Braves (1-1) lost on their home field.
Scott Doherty completed 11 of 26 pass attempts for 142 yards for Birmingham.
David Belk rushed six times for 31 yards, and was on the receiving end of a four-yard touchdown pass from kicker Luis Salguero on a fake field goal with 2:37 in the third quarter.
Marco Pleas carried 32 times for 232 yards for University (1-1), including touchdowns of seven, eight and 34 yards. He also made a 26-yard pass reception.
