CSUN No Match for Long Beach State

Jason Hughes had 19 kills but Cal State Northridge was swept by Long Beach State, 15-6, 15-12, 15-10, in a nonconference volleyball match Saturday at Matador Gym.

Chad Strickland and Collin Smith posted identical numbers for the Matadors (1-1), with 11 kills and six digs each. Ed Bond added seven total blocks for Northridge, which posted a .207 hitting percentage (54 kills, 26 errors in 135 attempts).

Tom Hoff had 22 kills and five total blocks, and Geoffrey Cryst added 20 kills and 11 digs for the 49ers (1-0).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 90, Hancock 63--Vernon Simmons scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Mack Cleveland added 14 points for the Monarchs (15-7) in a Western State Conference interdivisional game at Valley.

Santa Monica 68, Moorpark 60--Wendell Nunnery scored 17 points and Shawn Williams added 15 for Moorpark (9-12) in a WSC interdivisional game.

Damon Ollie, from North Hollywood High, scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds for Santa Monica (20-2).

Santa Barbara 65, Glendale 63--Glendale (4-14) missed two shots in the final 11 seconds in a WSC interdivisional game. Ryan Sylva scored 15 points for Glendale.

Cal Lutheran 79, La Verne 73--Dave Ulloa had 26 points and 10 assists for Cal Lutheran (9-4, 1-1) in an SCIAC game. Andy Saint had 16 points and Jon Rider added 10.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 68, Hancock 63--Jacque Tennies had 16 points and 16 rebounds for Valley (15-9) in a Western State Conference interdivisional game at Valley. Shawanda Hotchkiss added 18 points and six assists.

Glendale 75, Santa Barbara 46--Minnie Caluag scored 19 points and had six assists for Glendale (6-13) in a WSC interdivisional game at Glendale. Alicia Preston added 13 points for Glendale.

Cal Lutheran 76, Christian Heritage 55--Melissa Wood scored 23 points and Evi Orologas added 19 for the visiting Regals (6-7) in a nonconference game.

The Master’s 74, UC Santa Cruz 45--Ramah Andrews scored 18 points for the Mustangs (5-12) in a nonconference game at home. Kim DeVries added 13 points and seven rebounds for Master’s, which converted 29 Banana Slug turnovers into 23 points.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 7, St. Mary’s 0--Glenn Bassett’s first match as the Waves’ head coach continued the tradition he established at UCLA, where his teams won seven national championships from 1967-93. It was the Waves’ 32nd consecutive home victory.
