Santa Ana Scores, but Cypress Gets Its First Victory

It was a night of firsts Thursday at Western High as Santa Ana scored its first points of the season and Cypress picked up its first victory, 34-7 over the Saints in a nonleague football game.

“It was 0-4 versus 0-4, so somebody had to win,” Cypress Coach Ted Hovorka. “We’ve been underachieving all season. Maybe when they get a taste of this, it will turn them around.”

Cypress (1-4) scored first when Santa Ana wide receiver Chris Weaver was tackled in the end zone by linebacker Robert Foulkes for a safety with 4 minutes 23 seconds left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff Rashaun Lawrence returned the ball 38 yards to the Saints’ 32-yard line and seven plays later tailback Kelly Patterson jumped over the Santa Ana line for a one-yard touchdown with 1:35 left in the quarter, giving the Centurions an 8-0 lead.

Cypress took a 14-0 lead on a 19-yard pass from James Law to Lawrence and on the Centurions next possession, Law connected with Lawrence for a 41-yard touchdown pass and a 20-0 lead.

Santa Ana (0-5) got its first points of the season on its first possession of the second half when second string quarterback Omar Gomez, replacing Francisco Martinez who separated his shoulder in the second quarter, pitched to Ed Correa who ran 69 yards for the touchdown.

The Centurions scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter on a two-yard run from Patterson and a one-yard run by Jack Nealeigh.
