Behind the pitching of Greg Wold and a resurgent offense, Chatsworth High gained a measure of revenge by beating Cleveland, 7-3, in a Northwest Valley Conference baseball game Thursday at Chatsworth.

Tuesday, the Chancellors were pounded by Cleveland, 12-0, and managed only two hits.

But Thursday, Wold scattered eight hits and Chatsworth had nine hits, taking control with five runs in the third inning.

“What could go wrong did go wrong,” Chatsworth Coach Tom Meusborn said of Tuesday’s game. “We had to play better today; we couldn’t play much worse.”

Chatsworth improved to 8-5, 3-1 in conference play. Cleveland fell to 7-6, 3-1.

Wold (2-2), a starter as a junior last season, began the season as a second baseman and the team’s closer, notching two saves.

He started on the mound Thursday after injuries depleted the Chancellors’ staff.

“You don’t see too many guys who can start and close, but Greg’s got the confidence and the experience to do both,” Meusborn said.

Wold allowed three earned runs, struck out eight and walked one. He threw 119 pitches, 55 strikes, and retired the side in order three times.

Chatsworth scored a run in the first inning before breaking the game open in the third with a two-out, five-run rally that Wold started with a solo home run.

Three of the next five batters--David Sark, Nathan Frost and Travis Winn--doubled, and the Chancellors mixed in a single and a walk for good measure.

“All those runs with two out really set us back,” Cleveland Coach Steve Landress said. “You’ve got to give [Chatsworth] credit. They’re a good-hitting team.

Cleveland cut its deficit to 6-2 with two runs in the fourth but missed a chance to do more damage.

With one out and runners on first and second, Max Santillan doubled to left-center field. Jared Mills scored but Tony Cicero labored after rounding third and was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Tim Weigand. Vince Zuniga took a called third strike to end the inning.

Mills (1-2), Cleveland’s starter, allowed seven hits and six runs, five earned, in 2 2/3 innings.

Sark and Matt Cassell each had two hits and Winn had a hit and two runs batted in for Chatsworth.

Justin Savitt and Mike Schultz each had two hits for Cleveland.
