Northridge Falls in Season Finale

Cal State Northridge lost its season finale to UC Santa Barbara, 16-14, 15-2, 15-9, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Tuesday night at Northridge.

Senior Collin Smith had 16 kills for the 14th-ranked Matadors (14-13, 8-11 in MPSF play), who will not participate in postseason play for the first time since 1989.

Former La Canada High standout Donny Harris had 23 kills for the sixth-ranked Gauchos (16-8, 13-6).

Northridge’s loss was bad news for Pepperdine (18-8, 13-6), which lost a tiebreaker with Santa Barbara for third place in the Mountain Division and must travel to third-ranked Stanford (21-3, 15-3) for a first-round MPSF tournament match Saturday.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 5, UC San Diego 1--Tom McGee doubled in Joseph Jauregui to break a 1-1 tie and start a four-run eighth inning for the Kingsmen (26-7) in a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran.

Ventura 2, Hancock 0--Chris Cicuto hit a two-run home run in the fourth for the Pirates (20-12, 9-9) in a WSC game at Hancock.

Bakersfield 6, Mission 4--Jose Sandoval had three hits, including a run-scoring double, for Mission (16-19, 7-11) in a WSC game at Bakersfield.

Oxnard 12, Santa Barbara 9--Jay Nirenberg’s two-run double in the eighth capped a five-run rally and gave the Condors (16-16, 9-9) the lead for good in a WSC game at Santa Barbara.

Shawn Fossen drove in four runs with three hits for Oxnard.

Canyons 14, Pierce 3--Rob Rehfeld and Jesse Daggett each doubled, homered and drove in three runs for the Cougars (25-11, 12-6) in a WSC game at Pierce (13-22, 5-13).

Glendale 18, Valley 10--Brett Niles had three hits and three RBIs for the Vaqueros (24-10, 13-5) in a WSC game at Valley.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 5, Santa Monica 3--Colleen McDonald and Leah Barroso each had two hits for the Raiders (19-17, 9-4) in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark.

McDonald’s three-run homer in the fourth inning broke a 2-2 tie.
