JUSTIN FARGAS

Notre Dame, Jr., 100 meters

* The region’s athlete of the year was 4-4 in head-to-head meetings with Miguel Fletcher of Alemany, but Fargas won the last four, including victories in the Mission League finals with a career best of 10.58 and in the state championships with a wind-aided 10.52.

MIGUEL FLETCHER

Alemany, Jr., 200 meters

* Fletcher didn’t run as fast this season (21.13) as last (21.06 twice), but he won his second consecutive Southern Section Division III title and placed third in the state championships in a wind-aided 21.12.

CHRIS FORDE

Notre Dame, Sr., 400 meters

* Forde, who has signed with Cal State Northridge, and Taft’s Larry Jones posted a region-leading time of 47.80 to win the Southern Section Division III and City Section titles, but Forde bested Jones, 48.04 to 49.05, in a qualifying heat of the state championships and tied for sixth in the final.

RYAN MEUSE

Simi Valley, Jr., 800 meters

* The Southern Section Masters Meet champion posted the seven fastest times in the region, topped by a 1:52.57 clocking for second in the Arcadia Invitational on April 12. He placed sixth in the state championships with a time of 1:54.70.

ALI BENMOHAMED

Monroe, Sr., 1,600 meters

* The City Section champion recorded three of the four fastest times in the region, including a best of 4:17.27 to place fourth in the Arcadia Invitational.

DAVID LOPEZ

Hoover, Sr., 3,200 meters

* The Arizona-bound Lopez produced five of the six fastest times in the region, capped by a season-best 9:16.20 to place second in the Southern Section Division I final.

CARL RICHARDSON

Rio Mesa, Sr., 110-meter high hurdles

* Known previously for his exploits in football and basketball, Richardson recorded the five fastest times in the region in his first year of track, topped by a school record of 14.83 to win the Ventura County title.

BRIAN THOMA

Chaminade, Sr., 300-meter IM hurdles

* A repeat selection from last year, Thoma ran the three fastest times in the region, paced by a 39.04 clocking that won the Southern Section Division III title.

NOTRE DAME

400-meter relay, 1,600-meter relay

* The foursome of seniors Forde and David Escobar and juniors Fargas and Roderick Arzu dropped the baton in two of their last three races of the season in the 400 relay, but they did move to ninth on the all-time region list at 41.70. The same foursome broke the school record in the 1,600 relay four times in the last five weeks of the season, capped by a 3:14.53 clocking that placed them third in the state championships.

MICHAEL JACKSON

Channel Islands, Sr., high jump

* The Ventura County champion led the region with a best of 6-8 1/4 and placed third in the Southern Section Division I championships and seventh in the Masters Meet.

KEVIN BRUSCA

Camarillo, Sr., pole vault

* Brusca, the region leader at 14-7, cleared 14 feet or higher in seven meets. The Ventura County champion tied for third in the Southern Section Division I championships, but suffered a season-ending stress fracture in his right foot during that meet when he came down awkwardly after missing at 14-6.

COURTNEY PALMORE

Oxnard, Sr., long jump

* The Channel League champion led the region with a best of 23 feet and placed third in the Southern Section Division II finals, second in the Masters Meet and sixth in the state championships.

MARKUS CARR

Palmdale, Sr., triple jump

* Carr, who has a best of 46-3 1/2, ranked second on the region list behind Rio Mesa’s Kristian Phillips (47-3 1/4), but he performed at a higher level in the final month of the season. He placed third in the Southern Section Division I finals and fourth in the Masters Meet.

DENNIS FOX

Crespi, Sr., shotput

* The Mission League champion placed seventh in the Southern Section Division III championships and his best of 55-9 led the region by more than two feet.

KEVIN HOWARD

Oak Park, Sr., discus

* Howard, who has a best of 154-5, ranked third on the region list behind Westlake’s Bobby DeMars (162-11) and Camarillo’s Warren Tittlemier (158-8), but he defeated both of them to win the Ventura County title and placed second in the Southern Section Division IV championships.
