Thompson, Solis Commit to Colleges

Angela Thompson and Michael Solis, Brea Olinda graduates, have signed college commitments.

Thompson has signed to play softball with North Carolina A & T, her father, Alex, said Friday. She was a second-team All-Orange League selection as a senior and played for the After Shocks club team.

Solis will run cross-country and track at Long Beach State, said Daniel King, his high school coach.

King also announced he has resigned his post as the Wildcats’ cross-country and track coach to accept the head coaching job of girls’ cross country at Nevada Grass Valley Union High.

King’s teams won 12 Orange League titles, including the past five boys’ track and field titles.

Chris Rheaume, water polo coach at Pacifica, has resigned to concentrate on a new job as a teacher at a middle school in Paramount, according to Athletic Director Chris Hurst.

Rheaume coached the Mariners five seasons; they lost in the first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs last season.

The fourth stop of the Bud Light Ocean Festival Series begins July 26 at Tower 11 at Huntington State Beach.

Highlights of the event include day-long lifeguard competition, a one-mile ocean swim, paddleboard relays and an Iron Man relay. Competition starts at 9 a.m. For more information, call (310) 456-8142.

The 36th Huntington Beach Open Tennis Tournament will be held Aug. 23-24, 30-31 and Sept. 1 at five local sites: Pacific Sands Cabana Club, Seacliff Tennis Club, Lindborg Racquet club, Mile Square Tennis Center in Fountain Valley and Mesa Verde Tennis Club in Costa Mesa.

The tournament will feature men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles in open, open seniors divisions. Entry fee for the singles open division is $28, for all other singles is $25; doubles is $35 per team. Deadline for entry is Aug. 9. For more information, call (714) 960-1812.
