Lakewood Mayfair High won its first Southern Section football championship and ended 18 years of frustration in the process Friday night, defeating La Mirada, 28-14, in the Division IX final before 9,118 at Cerritos College.

The Monsoons, who are in the Suburban League with La Mirada, hadn’t defeated the Matadores since 1980. Mayfair (11-3) lost to La Mirada (13-1), 21-18, in November.

In that game, Mayfair running back Michael Williams missed the second half because of injury and fellow 1,000-yard runner Darius Hodges didn’t play because of disciplinary reasons.

They were the difference Friday.

Williams scored the game’s first touchdown and Hodges added two touchdown runs and led the Monsoons with 74 yards in 14 carries.

La Mirada running back Mike Lemon, who had 319 yards in the first game against Mayfair, was held to 74 yards and fumbled twice.

Monsoon quarterback Mike Harrison added 212 yards passing, including a 71-yard scoring strike to Joe Hunter in the third quarter that made it 28-14.
