Nguyen Makes Winning Shot for La Quinta
Jackie Nguyen’s layup with 10 seconds remaining gave La Quinta a 32-31 victory over Savanna in a La Quinta girls’ basketball tournament pool-play game Thursday.
The Aztecs (1-6) trailed by one when starting point guard Nadia Aziz fouled out with 1 minute 52 seconds left. La Quinta’s defense forced a turnover to set up Nguyen’s winning basket.
Clorinda Dorame scored 16 points for Savanna (4-6).
In other La Quinta tournament games:
Norwalk Glenn 47, University 46--Fala Suiaunoa made two free throws with 17 seconds left in the game to give University a 46-45 lead, but Glenn scored the game-winning basket six seconds later.
Suiaunoa had 19 points and 14 rebounds for University (5-3), which won its pool and will play Dana Hills in the final tonight at 7:30 at La Quinta.
Santiago 51, Saddleback 35--Stephanie Reupena had 17 points and 11 assists for Santiago (6-3).
In Gary Raya Classic pool-play games: El Dorado 54, Downey 14--Elaine Mar scored 10 points for El Dorado (8-1), which will play in Saturday’s championship game. Downey is 3-5.
In the first round of the Lakewood Artesia tournament:
Rosary 64, Pacifica 48--Maggie Barnett scored 29 points for Rosary (5-3).
In nonleague games:
Capistrano Valley Christian 48, Laguna Beach 25--Bethany Thom scored 22 points and Melissa Sands had 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Eagles (6-1).
Kennedy 46, Magnolia 40--Melanie Nakamura scored 19 points to lead visiting Kennedy (3-4).
Estancia 42, Notre Dame Academy 40--Lisa Steinfeld scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, for visiting Estancia (6-2).
Orange Lutheran 57, Connelly 45--Nicole Grady scored 10 of her 18 points in the third quarter for Orange Lutheran (2-4).
Ruth Lazzari scored 21 points for Connelly.
