Irvine, Newport Harbor Advance to Title Game

Chris Ferguson scored 18 points and Tim Rapp had 15, leading Irvine to a 58-43 semifinal victory over La Costa in the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament.

Mike Bonwell and Brian Falustich led La Costa (6-1) with 12 points each.

Irvine (8-1) will play Newport Harbor in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. today at Concordia University.

In the other semifinal:

Newport Harbor 69, Woodbridge 45--Matt Jameson had 20 points to help the Sailors advance to the tournament final. Scott Barlow led Woodbridge with 13 points.

In other tournament games:

Dana Hills 64, Mark Keppel 51--Dana Hills rallied from four points down early in the fourth quarter to defeat the Aztecs in the consolation semifinal. Andrew Spaulding led the Dolphins with 10 points.

Fountain Valley 61, Cajon 46--Fountain Valley was never threatened as Jeff Greenfield had 16 points. Walker Blake’s 18 points led Cajon.

San Clemente 70, Oceanside 46--Mitch Pierce and Brian George scored 12 points each for the Tritons (6-2), who will play University at Concordia today in the fifth-place game.

University 79, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 75 (OT)--Chet Johnson, Andy Lawrence and Larry Brown scored points in overtime to lift University.

Vista 71, Huntington Beach 41--Jordan Borad had 12 points to lead Huntington Beach, but the Oilers couldn’t rally after Vista’s 32-point third quarter. Donyare Mayfield scored 16 points for Vista.

In the Arroyo Grande tournament:

Ocean View 70, Paso Robles 50--Ocean View (4-2) advanced to the finals today in the Arroyo Grande Tournament. Tony Dow led Ocean View with 15 points, nine steals and eight assists.

In the Bob Osborne Tournament:

Los Amigos 38, Santa Ana 33--Alvaro Arcos scored 10 points in for Los Amigos, which held Santa Ana to 10 points in the first half. The Lobos play Foothill today at 3 p.m. for third place.

Foothill 96, Santiago 72--Zack Smith scored a team-high 24 points. He also led Foothill (7-1) in rebounds with 10.

Teammate Alex Rasmussen added 20 points, Chad Bigler hit five three-pointers for 19 points, and Drew Bouford had 15 assists.

Miguel Soriano led Santiago (3-5) with a game-high 25 points, and three teammates scored in double figures: Nghia Ho with 19 points, Klemara Krouch with 13, and Jose Lizarraras with 12.

In the Foothill tournament:

Costa Mesa 72, Fairmont 19--Nate Jones had 17 rebounds along with his game-high 20 points. Rick Hatsuchi had 11 points and five assists for Costa Mesa.

In the Gary Raya Coed Classic:

Esperanza 56, El Rancho 36--Kenny Ho scored a game-high 11 points for the host Aztecs. Lloyd Walls, Anthony Vicencia and Patrick Lefler added nine points apiece.

In the Troy Courtside Clash:

Troy 69, Calvary Chapel 40--Troy forced 18 turnovers to overcome Calvary Chapel and advance to the tournament championship. Jerry Inzunza had a big game with 25 points, five steals, six rebounds and six assists. The Warriors will face Whittier Christian in the championship game tonight at 7:30 p.m.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Buena Park 61, La Quinta 55--DeAndre Gipson led Buena Park (8-2) with 15 points and four steals and Jamal Allen made four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Fullerton 79, Rancho Alamitos 73--Akachi Azubuike had 25 points and Michael Bridgford had 18 for the Indians.

Laguna Beach 77, Orange Lutheran 58--Jesse Obrand scored 23 points and Kurt Beimfohr had 20 to lead host Laguna Beach (8-2).

Loara 58, El Modena 47--Herbert Gracia led Loara (9-1) with 22 points and Stephan Perovich scored 16 for El Modena.

Savanna 59, Damien 40--Solomon Brown hit three three-pointers for Savanna (8-2) and led all scorers with 22 points.

Servite 54, Bellflower St. John Bosco 52--Rodel Lizan made a lay up with two seconds remaining to win the game.

Andrew Moore finished with a team-high 14 points for Servite (4-6). John Morris and Curtis Bibolet added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
