Scramble on for Postseason Spots

The final week of the season brings with it title chases and fights for playoff berths. Here’s a look at the league races for baseball and softball.

Baseball

Century League: Canyon (20-4, 12-1) and Foothill (17-6, 10-3) have locked up slots. Villa Park (10-13, 5-8) and Orange (10-14, 5-8) are scrambling for third. Villa Park and Orange play each other twice, and Villa Park must sweep the two games. The Comanches need one victory or one Foothill loss to win the title outright.

Empire League: El Dorado (16-8, 10-3) has a postseason reservation, and needs one more victory for the outright league championship. Cypress (15-9, 8-5), Kennedy (14-10, 7-6), Katella (13-11, 7-6), and Loara (12-11, 7-6) are chasing the other two automatic bids. Kennedy will play El Dorado twice, as do Loara and Cypress. Katella finishes with two against Century (3-19, 0-13).

Freeway League: La Habra (17-6, 11-2) and Fullerton (14-7-1. 9-4) are in. Sunny Hills (12-12, 7-6) and Sonora (8-15, 6-7) are scrambling for third. The Raiders have two games with Buena Park (8-14, 3-10), and the Lancers play the Indians. The Highlanders need one victory over Troy (7-16, 3-10) or a Fullerton loss for their first outright league title since 1988.

Garden Grove League: La Quinta (24-1, 10-0), Pacifica (16-8, 8-2) and Garden Grove (12-10, 7-3) have wrapped up the automatic bids. The Aztecs need one more victory for a fifth consecutive league title.

Golden West League: One game separates Servite (18-5-1, 12-1) and Ocean View (15-9, 11-2). The teams, which have made the playoffs, meet twice this week. Westminster (15-8, 8-5) jumped over Tustin (16-7, 7-6) for third last week. Those teams face off twice this week.

Olympic League: Calvary Chapel (17-5, 12-1) has clinched a third straight league championship. Whittier Christian (11-10, 8-5) has clinched a playoff spot. Orange Lutheran (10-12, 7-6) is trying to is trying to hold off Brethren Christian (10-11-1, 5-7-1) for third. The Lancers have two meetings with Calvary Chapel, and the Warriors play Cerritos Valley Christian (5-10-1, 5-7-1) twice.

Orange League: Brea Olinda (16-7-1, 10-2-1), and Western (16-7-1, 9-3-1) Savanna (10-13, 7-6) have clinched the three berths.

Pacific Coast League: Aliso Niguel (18-6, 13-0) has won its first league title. Laguna Hills (14-9, 10-3) and University (14-8, 7-6) have clinched the other two spots.

Sea View League: Santa Margarita (19-5, 11-2) is being chased by Woodbridge (15-6, 10-3). The Eagles face El Toro (16-8, 8-5), which has clinched third. The Warriors play Irvine (9-15, 6-7) twice.

South Coast League: Mater Dei (19-4, 11-2) and Dana Hills (16-7, 9-4) have two of the playoff spots. Mission Viejo (14-9, 6-7) and Trabuco Hills (12-11, 6-7) are tied for third, but Trabuco Hills has the tie-breaker if the teams end tied. Capistrano Valley (9-14, 5-8) is a long shot. It needs to sweep Mission Viejo and hope Dana Hills beats Trabuco Hills at least once. One more Mater Dei victory or Dana Hills loss gives the Monarchs a seventh straight title outright.

Sunset League: Esperanza (15-7-1, 9-3-1) and Fountain Valley are in (15-9, 8-5), and will decide the league championship when they play this week. For third place, Marina (8-16, 5-8) must sweep Edison (16-8, 7-6) to reach third.

Softball

Academy League: St. Margaret’s (14-1, 6-0) leads Downey Calvary Chapel (11-5, 5-1) by one game, and play at Rio San Gabriel Park in Downey Friday. Capistrano Valley (8-6, 3-3) needs a victory to clinch third place.

Century League: El Modena (20-4-1, 7-0) upset Foothill (20-4, 6-1) in the first round, 6-3, and holds a one-game lead over the Knights with three to play. They play Wednesday at Foothill. Third-place Canyon (18-11, 5-3) holds a 1 1/2-game lead over Villa Park, which plays Foothill and El Modena.

Empire League: Kennedy (15-6, 7-0) holds a two-game lead over Cypress (13-10, 5-2) with three to play. Third-place El Dorado (12-9, 4-4) trails Cypress by two games, and leads Loara (9-16-1, 3-4-1) and Century (11-11-1, 3-4-1) by a half-game. El Dorado plays Century and Cypress this week.

Garden Grove League: Pacifica (22-3, 10-0) already has clinched the league title. Los Amigos (13-5, 7-3), Garden Grove (14-8-1, 6-3) and Rancho Alamitos (12-7, 7-4) are within a half-game of each other for second place. Los Amigos plays both this week.

Golden West League: Rosary (20-6, 8-0) has won a share of the title; the Royals have a two-game lead over Ocean View (16-9, 6-2) with two to play. Third-place Westminster (10-9, 5-3) leads Tustin (8-11-1, 3-4) by 1 1/2 games and play Friday at Westminster.

Olympic League: Calvary Chapel (15-4, 7-0) leads Orange Lutheran (16-7, 7-1) by a half-game and play Thursday at Orange Lutheran. The remaining four teams are within two games of each other at least 3 1/2 games behind.

Orange League: Brea (16-5, 8-0) holds a two-game lead over Valencia (14-12, 6-2) with two to play. Valencia defeated third-place Savanna (9-10, 5-3) on Monday.

Pacific Coast League: Laguna Hills (15-7, 7-0) will try to protect its one-game lead when it plays host to second-place Aliso Niguel (9-11, 6-1) Thursday. Third-place University (8-13, 4-3) has a two-game lead over Estancia.

Sea View League: Woodbridge (24-4-1, 6-0) has clinched a share of its 16th consecutive league title, but finishes the season playing two ranked teams, second-place Irvine (19-4, 4-2) and fourth-place Santa Margarita (16-8-1, 2-4). El Toro (17-10, 4-3) can share second place with a victory over Santa Margarita coupled with an Irvine loss.

South Coast League: Mater Dei (23-3, 8-0) has clinched the league title. Trabuco Hills (12-9-1, 5-3) and San Clemente (12-12-1, 5-3) are tied for second with a two-game lead over Dana Hills.

Sunset League: Marina (19-5, 6-1) holds a two-game lead with two to play. Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Edison and Esperanza are a game apart for second place. Los Alamitos plays at Fountain Valley Wednesday.
