Dorsey Keeps It Going

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Dorsey High boys left little to chance in their quest for another City Section track and field championship Thursday night at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.

The Dons even exceeded Coach Ralph Tilley’s expectations, rolling up 91 points to outdistance Gardena (50) and Taft (47) for their third consecutive title.

“I thought we could get maybe 78 [points],” said Tilley, whose team won its fifth title in the past six years. “But we had no idea we could get that many points. We had a lot of good people shooting at us.”

Dorsey won by dominating in the hurdles and jumping events.

Juniors Greg Lee and Terry Ellis went one-two in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with Lee winning in times of 13.92 seconds and 38.11 seconds.

Dorsey was nearly as impressive in the long and triple jumps. J.L. Lewis won the triple jump at 45-6 1/2 and finished third in the long jump and Edell Shepard placed second in both events.

The top individual performer among the boys was Marshall’s Andre Young, who won the 800 (1:55.56), 1,600 (4:20.80) and 3,200 (9:30.52).

Taft won its first girls’ championship with 112 points, more than twice as many as second-place Birmingham and Dorsey at 53 each.

Leading the way was UCLA-bound sprinter Eboni Grayson, who was victorious in the 100 (11.62), 200 (24.12) and triple jump (39-6). Grayson’s mark in the triple jump set a City record.

Gardena’s Kristia Groves won the 100 hurdles in a City-record 14.33 seconds and the long jump at 17-8, but pulled up in the 100 meters with an apparent hamstring injury. Coach Al Hearvey said he is concerned about her chances in the state meet next week.
