Antelope Valley Dismisses Marshall

Junior running back Jermaine Marshall has been removed from the Antelope Valley High football team, Coach Brent Newcomb said.

“I think it was just time for him to move on,” Newcomb said of Marshall, who rushed for 1,405 yards and 17 touchdowns last season at Kilpatrick.

In two games with Antelope Valley, Marshall had 110 yards in 24 carries, including 81 yards last week against Sylmar.

“Hopefully, he’ll get his things together and be back with us next year,” Newcomb said.

Shutout: Of the 65 teams that Bishop Amat has played more than once, Antelope Valley is the only team the Lancers have not defeated before this season. Antelope Valley was 2-0 in the series before Friday night.

Travelogue: Besides serving as football coach at Westlake, Jim Benkert also has become a travel agent for tight end Mike Seidman.

Benkert has been setting up recruiting visits for Seidman. Just this week, he was on the phone with Penn State Coach Joe Paterno.

Seidman’s first visit is set for UCLA on Dec. 12. He also has visits planned to Colorado, Arizona State and USC. Penn State or Washington will likely be his fifth trip.

Injury report: Notre Dame went into its game against rushing-oriented Saugus without starting defensive lineman Armando Lopez, a 6-foot, 205-pound junior. Lopez is recovering from a sprained ankle.

Cannonized: Carl Cannon may have met his match Friday night.

At 6 feet and 310 pounds, the Taft defensive lineman might be the biggest starter in the Northwest Valley Conference.

But against Dorsey, Cannon faced someone bigger.

Dorsey offensive tackle Travis Nelson, 6-6 and 350 pounds, was able to contain Cannon.

Dorsey had 147 yards rushing in the first half and 234 for the game.

Bright spot: If there were any positives for Sylmar to take from its 49-26 loss to Hart on Thursday night, it was the performance of backup quarterback Derek Martin.

The 6-foot, 215-pound sophomore completed four of five passes for 31 yards and two touchdowns after starter Noah Albiston was knocked out early in the fourth quarter.

Martin finished an 87-yard touchdown drive that Albiston started, then led touchdown drives of 57 and 24 yards against Hart’s second-string defense.
