St. Bonaventure to Play Lancers in Final

Lorenzo Booker scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to break open a close game and lead the Ventura St. Bonaventure to a 36-7 victory over Carpinteria Saturday in a Southern Section Division XI semifinal game at Moorpark High.

St. Bonaventure (13-0), the defending champion, plays Orange Lutheran on Saturday for the championship at a site to be determined after a coin flip today.

Booker rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns in 23 carries but had only 70 yards rushing in the first half. Fifty-nine of his first-half yards came on a touchdown run that gave the Seraphs a 6-0 lead with 8:21 to play in the first quarter.

Carpinteria (6-6-1) answered with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that consumed seven minutes and resulted in quarterback Chris Gocong’s 18-yard touchdown run. The conversion kick gave the Warriors a 7-6. It was only the second time this season St. Bonaventure trailed.

In other Southern Section semifinals:

Chino 48, Downey 41--Gabe Rivera rushed for 185 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winner in the second overtime, as the Cowboys upset the previously unbeaten Vikings in a Division II game at Downey.

Chino will play Baseline League rival Upland in the championship game Friday.

Ventura 34, Lompoc 21--Tyler Ebell continued his amazing season by rushing for 319 yards in 38 carries and scoring five touchdowns in the Cougars’ Division IV victory over the Braves at Ventura.

The effort raised Ebell’s season rushing total to 4,220 yards, breaking the national record of 4,087 yards held by Travis Henry, now at Tennessee. The UCLA-bound Ebell set a state record with his 61st touchdown, breaking the 59-touchdown record held by Tustin’s DeShaun Foster, now at UCLA.

Los Altos 28, Whittier California 27--Dominic Melano’s extra point with 36 seconds remaining was the difference in the Division VII game after the top-seeded Conquerors blew a 21-0 advantage and watched the Condors score 27 points in a six-minute span of the second half to take a temporary lead.
