Villa Park Team Wins Mixed Doubles Title

Villa Park’s Mike Chansawangpuvana and Mai Mangkalakiri defeated Aaron Huynh and Joanne Yeung of Alhambra to win their second consecutive title in the Southern Section mixed doubles badminton championships Friday at the Orange County Badminton Club in Garden Grove.

Chansawangpuvana, a sophomore, and Mangkalakiri, a junior, won, 15-3, 10-15, 15-2. Both are members of the junior national training program.

The Southern Section individual championships begin Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Orange County Badminton Club.

In the first round of the Division I boys’ volleyball playoffs:

No. 7 Newport Harbor 3, Long Beach Poly 1--Billy Clayton had 21 kills, eight blocks and four aces and setter Kent Turner had 47 assists, eight digs and two aces for visiting Newport Harbor (14-4) in a 15-7, 15-7, 8-15, 15-9 victory.

The Sailors next play Tuesday night against the winner of the San Clemente-Corona match.

In Division III volleyball:

St. Margaret’s 3, Los Angeles Milken 0--Pete Spenuzza had 14 kills for host St. Margaret’s (16-2), which won, 15-9, 15-9, 15-5.
