Sheng, Borchard Reach Semifinals in Singles
Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks High and Quinn Borchard of Rio Mesa advanced to the singles semifinals of the Southern Section individual tournament today with two victories each Friday at the SeaCliff Tennis Club in Huntington Beach.
Sheng, bidding for his second consecutive Southern Section title, defeated Aaron Yovan of Irvine University, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and beat Jeff Kazarian of Peninsula, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 16. Sheng, a junior, faces Joseph Kao of Sunny Hills.
Kao topped Scott Spencer of Chadwick, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and beat Alex Yaftali of Westlake, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16.
Borchard, a senior, beat Chris Surapol of Whitney, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and defeated Claremont’s Daniel Clemons, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Borchard plays K.C. Corkery of Mira Costa in the semifinals. Corkery cruised past Rylan Rizza of Peninsula, 6-0, 6-3, in the quarterfinals, and Jack Li of University, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16.
Semifinal matches begin at 10:30 a.m. today at the SeaCliff club, with finals to follow.
In doubles, Tim Mullane and Amir Nejad of Agoura defeated Tom Novak and Emil Novak of Damien, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Mullane and Nejad defeated Daniel Suvor and Mike Redondo of Murrieta Valley, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) earlier in the day.
Allan Haldeman and Aron Gortman of Harvard-Westlake defeated Mike Horak and Billy Corso of Westlake, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Haldeman and Gortman beat Cameron Nazemi and Dio Ramirez of Palm Springs, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 16.
Mullane and Nejad face Goh Fukagaki and Tiege Sullivan of Peninsula in the semifinals.
Gortman and Haldeman play Brian Swatt and Ray Hekamat of Beverly Hills.
